Nailed it! Toronto exceeds Kyoto target
Back in 2007 when City Council passed the Climate Change and Clean Air Action Plan, we set what seemed like an ambitious target for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: 6% below 1990 levels by 2012 — equivalent to Canada’s target under theKyoto Protocol. Since then, the Federal Government has formally withdrawn from Kyoto, citing the impossibility of achieving the 6% target. So how is Toronto doing?
A progress report released by the City last week indicates that Toronto has exceeded the Kyoto target by 2.5X! GHG emissions for 2011 are estimated at 23.2 Mt, down 15% from 1990 levels. Not only have we exceeded our 2012 target, but we are halfway to the Council-approved 2020 target of 30% below 1990 levels!
So how did we get there? Toronto’s emissions come from four major sources: electricity used in homes and buildings, natural gas used for space and water heating, gasoline/diesel used for cars and trucks, and methane emissions from our garbage as it rots in landfills. Emissions are down for all sources except transportation.

Earlier this Spring, Toronto City Councillors voted unanimously in favour of having the city qualify as Canada’s 16th Fair Trade Town. Toronto now joins over 1100 cities worldwide in sending the message that it is committed to supporting the fair trade movement that has produced measurable improvements in the quality of life of millions of people in the developing world. Christoff who was an active participant in the Quebec strike movement, has been heavily involved in social justice struggles in Quebec, Canada and internationally for over a decade. Le fond de l’air est rouge (http://www.howlarts.net/words) is a collection of texts about the 2012 Quebec student uprising by Montreal artist and activist Stefan Christoff. Written between spring 2011 and summer 2012, this series of articles includes first hand accounts of the incredible street protests in Montreal and reflections on the student strike within the context of Quebec revolutionary history. Published by the Howl! arts collective, this zine brings movement-based reporting originally published online into a physical format. The goal of this zine is to create a piece of cultural documentation on a key moment in Quebec popular history.

The Middle East in Revolt: Turkey, the Kurds and the New Imperialist Order

Middle Eastern states and world powers find it very difficult to govern and maintain the obsolete regional and international order that was crafted by UK and France in 1918 in the wake of dismantling the Ottoman Empire, and survived the upheavals of WWII, the rise of US Empire, the end of the Cold War, unceasing wars, and the "Arab Spring." The state of crisis offers opportunities for the peoples in the region to build a different world, but as we have seen in the aftermath of the "Arab Spring", Middle Eastern social movements have failed to shape the direction and extent of social and political transformation, while fundamentalism and imperialism have replaced one type of authoritarianism with another and turned the region into a state of interminable war and destruction. This panel will discuss developments in Turkey, the project to re-structure the Middle East under a neo-Ottoman order, and Turkey's role in maintaining the US-centred imperialist system.

Organized by the Canada Africa Partnership on AIDS (CAP/AIDS), the AIDS Ride for Africa is an annual bike-a-thon in support of local grassroots projects aimed at overcoming HIV/AIDS in African communities. This year, as we bike to "cap" AIDS, we are supporting local community efforts through providing bikes and resources for projects aimed at preventing the spread of HIV and helping AIDS-affected families to earn sustainable incomes. These rides each begin around 10:30 in the morning, run a loop just under 20 km, and end with a barbeque celebration.

Family Emergency Preparedness Workshop
Wednesday June 19, 7 - 9 pm

In this workshop, our presenter, Stefan Verstappen, will provide detailed information for individuals and families about preparing for various types of short and long-term emergencies. Today, more than ever, we need to ensure we have both the skills and materials to withstand such emergencies as:
• Climate related emergencies such as floods, tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanoes, snow/ice storms
• Geological disasters - avalanches, earthquakes, landslides
• Human-made emergencies – chemical releases, bomb threats, nuclear meltdown, power failure, epidemic/pandemic diseases
We will teach participants how to build an emergency survival kit with the supplies needed to be safe and take care of yourself and your family for at least three days. We will also discuss issues that may force the population to withstand longer disruption of normal services such as water, fuel, food and other necessities. Participants will come away from the workshop with a better understanding of the importance of personal emergency preparedness and a plan to achieving this as well as the confidence to implement this plan should it be necessary.
