☢ Ontario gets two nuclear-energy options <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=1c1dc32c60&e=45743fde61>  Westinghouse and Candu Energy Inc. submitted proposals for a contract that would top $10-billion to build 2 new reactors at Darlington. Critics question whether the new reactors will ever be needed. “The reality is that electricity demand in Ontario is falling,” said Mark Winfield, an environmental studies professor at York University. He said nuclear represents yesterday’s technology – a large, centralized generation source that requires long lead times and lots of upfront capital.

☢ Make proposed nuclear bids public <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=5dfcbee25a&e=45743fde61>  NDP Energy critic Peter Tabuns urged the Liberal government to make public the full costs of two bids to build new nuclear reactors, including information about whether taxpayers will be on the hook for cost overruns.

 ☢ Pickering Nuclear Station Should Be Closed, says Greenpeace <http://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=c06131c082&e=45743fde61>  On May 30, Greenpeace's nuclear campaigner Shawn-Patrick Stensil asked the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to close the aging Pickering nuclear station. Stensil highlighted how Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) own risk studies show that Pickering exceeds safety standards and should be shut down. The Commission is expected to make a decision by the end of August on whether Pickering can continue operating.

It's hydroelectric power, and we could easily augment what we currently produce by tapping into Quebec's vast supply. Vermont, New England, New York and Cornwall all get hydroelectric power from the province right next door to us. It's cheaper and healthier, and we can lock in a price to pay for only what we need.”
