Feeling Congested? Have your say!
The City of Toronto is undertaking Phase 2 of Feeling Congested, a public consultation project on the future of transportation in Toronto. As part of Phase 2, the City is looking for feedback on a draft complete streets framework, rapid transit decision-making criteria, and a bicycle policy framework. The consultation results will help inform transportation policies in Toronto’s Official Plan, a high level policy document which guides growth and development in the City.
TTCriders wants to make sure that the voices of transit riders are heard throughout the consultation process. Click HERE to let the City know what you think!

Support Dr. Roland Wong - Restore Special Diet, Raise the Rates!
Monday, July 29, 8:30 am
College of Physicians and Surgeon, 80 College St, just west of Bay at Elizabeth
Dr. Roland Wong is a Toronto physician who fought for access to the Special Diet Allowance for many people across Toronto and is now facing a disciplinary hearing at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. The College will be choosing how to best punish Dr. Roland Wong for daring to ensure that his patients had enough income to eat properly and stay healthy. The real people that should be punished are those in the government that force people to live on sub-poverty levels of income. This is a government that has slashed the Special Diet, cut Community Start-Up, and pushed down the rates of social assistance by over 55% since 1995 – and yet they criminalize a health provider. Rob Ford, who laid a complaint against Dr. Wong, said that, 'Doctors should not be advocates for the poor.' Roland Wong is an advocate and more! Please come out and show Dr Wong that he has friends and supporters in the community. And let's send a message to those in power to END CRIMINALIZATION – RAISE the RATES NOW!

Introduction to Kombucha and Naturally Carbonated Sodas Workshop
Monday, July 29, 6-8:30 PM.
West End Food Coop, 1229 Queen W. (Queen and Dufferin)
Spend the evening learning about brewing natural sodas and kombucha with Rebekka Hutton from Alchemy Pickle Company. We'll taste a variety of (non-alchoholic) beverages, and brew a batch of basic kombucha. As a group, we'll brainstorm soda flavours, and make a batch of something using organic whey and honey. We'll also make a ginger starter together that you can take home to make your own soda. What's Kombucha? Kombucha is a ferment brewed to be just tangy enough, but not too vinegary known to aid in digestion, as well as being super refreshing. Find out more on Rebekka's website here: http://alchemypicklecompany.ca/.

Ableism and the Question of the Human
Tuesday, July 30, 1 - 5 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor Street West (St. George subway), Room 5-280
This seminar promises to provoke questions regarding the meaning of "human" that can be revealed in everyday assumptions of ability. How, for example, do medical, legal, or educational forms of engaging those who are typically excluded do more than confirm the normative order of ableism or, worse, reproducing human degradation?
This free, public, accessible seminar brings us together with Drs. Dan Goodley from Sheffield University, UK; James Overboe, Waterloo University; Anne McGuire, New College, University Toronto along with Rinaldo Walcott and Tanya Titchkosky from OISE with Lead Discussant Dr Kirsty Liddiard, Post-Doc fellow from Ryerson University.

Reviewing Ontario's Long Term Energy Plan - Speak up now!
Tues. and Wed., July 30 and 31, 7 - 9 p.m.
Intercontinental Toronto Yorkville, 220 Bloor W. (near Avenue Road)
The Ministry of Energy is consulting with the public and other stakeholders about their long-term energy plan. There are 3 ways to provide feedback: take a short survey, submit a formal submission, and/or attend a public open house. Let them know that you favour conservation, hydro imports from Quebec, and green energy over high cost, dangerous nuclear new- and re-build projects. Speak out now before we get stuck with another 6 decades of nuclear waste, danger and debt.

Green Energy Alternatives to the Tarsands
With Keith Stewart, of Greenpeace
Wed. July 31, 7 p.m.
Friends House, 60 Lowther Ave. (St. George subway station)
The extraction of tar sands is poisoning people, wildlife, land and water in the name of a viable economy. Not only is this a false economy (spills, clean up, health issues and insurance, environmental degradation all cost a lot of money!), but there are many alternatives that the oil companies have spent a lot of money to make us doubt. Enbridge wants the tar sands to come through Toronto, putting us all at risk. Exploiting and transporting toxic tar sands is not the answer: Come learn and share what you think is!

ChocoSol Jaguar Chocolate Making Workshop
Wednesday, July 31 from 6:30 - 9 p.m.
ChocoSol, 225 Geary
Join ChocoSol’s Founder (Michael Sacco) and Lead Chocolatier (Chrystal Porter) for a hands-on small group jaguar chocolate making workshop. Attendees will hand grind, mold, and temper jaguar chocolate, learn about the ingredient process, and enjoy a tasting and talk.
Jaguar cacao, ye li, patastle, pataxtle, theobromae bicoloris: these are some of the English, Chinanteco, Nahuatl, and Linnean names for a cacao seed that grows in the ancient forest gardens. Not only are the forest gardens habitat for fauna like the jaguar, they provide ways for indigenous communities to create safety belts of communal use around natural areas. This is beyond conservation, and is rooted in millennia of ecological and spiritual stewardship. Today, ChocoSol is proud to be part of a small cadre of chocolatiers, chefs, farmers, and artisans participating in the regeneration of the jaguar cacao, both through seedling planting and intercultural encounter, dialogue, and exchange, as well as through recipe development and intercultural learning.
$50 person (cash please). A minimum of 5 people is needed. Maximum 13.
Attendees also have the opportunity to purchase jaguar chocolate at a reduced price.
To reserve your spot, please email info at chocosoltraders.com

Making the Youth Count in Canada’s Future
The Struggle of Young Workers in the Age of Austerity and Neoliberal Globalization - Ontario-wide conference
Sat. August 3
United Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street (near Spadina and College)
For youth in Canada, the policies that continue to be implemented by the Conservative government as part of the neoliberal agenda of globalization indicate the relentless and worsening attacks on our present conditions and future livelihoods can no longer be denied. As witnessed in mounting student debt and the rise of contractual/”flexible” work, along with the decline of meaningful, full-time positions and job security for all, the impacts of regressive changes to social programming, education and labour need to be addressed more than ever. Recognizing this pressing need is crucial, especially in light of the resultant intensification of the struggles universally faced by youth in Canada’s racialized and marginalized communities and the concurrent global economic crisis.
Registration fee is $15 (includes meals and conference materials)
