Urgently needed: volunteers to canvass on the Emerald Ash Borer problem
All of the 860.000 ash trees in Toronto, over 8% of our urban forest, are at risk of dying due to the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) including those growing in neighbourhoods like yours. This invasive pest tunnels underneath the bark, cutting off teh flow of water and nutrients and killing the tree within 2-3 years. We urgently need volunteers to canvass door-to door to help get word out regarding the perilous situation of Toronto's ash trees. Energy East Pipeline: Building a Nation on a Nightmare
TransCanada officially announced on August 1 a $12-billion Energy East tar sands pipeline project. If constructed, the pipeline would run from Alberta to the coast of St. John, New Brunswick, and would carry 1.1 million barrels of crude a day, which would enable a 50 per cent increase tar sands production.

Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex and Security in Sixties Montreal

In the 1960s, for at least a brief moment, Montreal became what seemed an unlikely centre of Black Power and the Caribbean left. In October 1968 the Congress of Black Writers at McGill University brought together well-known Black thinkers and activists from Canada, the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean—people like C.L.R. James, Stokely Carmichael, Miriam Makeba, Rocky Jones, and Walter Rodney. Within months of the Congress, a Black-led protestat Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) exploded on the front pages of newspapers across the country—raising state security fears about Montreal as the new hotbed of international Black radical politics.

France: One year after the Sarkozy defeat

François Hollande and his Socialist Party came to power following presidential and legislative elections in May-June 2012. While the defeat of hard-Right president Nicolas Sarkozy and his UMP party certainly came as a huge relief, Hollande and his government have essentially pursued the same agenda as the defeated forces of the Right and have plummeted in the opinion polls. How have the forces to the left of the Hollande government responded in a context of Socialist disarray, continuing economic crisis in France and the EU and growing popularity of the far-Right Front National party? What are their prospects in the coming period? Come out for a talk and discussion about these and other questions with a supporter of the GTWA and Socialist Project who has been living in France for the past year and who is a member of the New Anti-Capitalist Party (NPA) in Paris.
