The New Commune-ist Manifesto is the answer. While following the spirit of the old, the New Manifesto is written for the twenty-first-century working class and transforms the original from a historical document into a call-for-action to build an economic democracy based on environmental sustainability. The book argues that regaining our vision of an alternative to the existing system is the key to rebuilding the workers movement. But this vision must be more than “pie in the sky” — it must be practical and based on experience. It must confront the real problems we face, including the environmental crisis that jeopardizes our planet.

At the height of the Colonial Period, the Western powers in a number of trading enclaves around the world enjoyed what was called ‘extraterritorial power’: their citizens and commercial enterprises were governed by the colonial powers own legal systems and not the host nations. At the moment the sisterhood of multinational corporations (today including state-owned Chinese multinationals) are replicating such a system, established under the guise of a set of international trade agreements with so-called ‘investor protection’ clauses. Modelled on NAFTA's chapter 11, they will triumph corporate profit over environment protection, human rights, fight for gender equality, for labour rights, etc. National and local legislation will be superseded by board of arbitrators. We must wake up the Canadian people up to the implications of this sacrifice on the altar of corporate profit maximization.

Freelance journalist Brett Story explores the roots of this practice in North America, and the profound and often devastating impact it has on people who are severed from social contact.

The Toronto Chapter of the Council of Canadians wants you to help us Stop Line 9! Come hear about Enbridge's proposal to reverse the aging cross-Toronto pipeline (Line 9) to transport Tar Sands bitumen and the growing movement of opposition against it. Our chapter is strongly opposed to this project. We are an intervenor for the National Energy Board (NEB) hearings, along with the Hamilton and Guelph chapters, plus the national Council of Canadians. The York University chapter will also be commenting orally at these hearings in October. We'll discuss what actions are already being planned, how we can support them, as well as our own chapter's activities. This will be an action-oriented meeting, so come prepared to participate and get involved.

On March 11th, 2011 a 9.0 earthquake triggered a massive tsunami off the coast of Japan. This disaster resulted in an estimated 15,878 deaths and trillions of dollars in damage, including a partial meltdown at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In April 2012, Yogi, Buddhist teacher and activist Michael Stone arrives on a pilgrimage to Japan in the wake of the tsunami and Fukushima meltdown to learn how the Japanese are responding to the crisis. Michael speaks with local residents, artists, activists, and researchers about life in the aftermath and reflects on the old Zen traditions and cities of beautiful temples. How we can embody the Bodhisattva vow in this time.

Volunteers and community organizers in Ontario are invited to learn the basics on campaign strategy, civil disobedience and organizing in your community. We’ll give you skills to help mobilize and carry out your own actions. This training is a great opportunity to meet others in the environmental and activist community, share your knowledge & experience, team build and strategize. Together we can build a bigger, stronger movement to stop environmental destruction and social injustice. Workshops include:

· building groups and growing support
· non-violent direct action and civil disobedience
