Austerity, youth & the low-wage economy
Why is capitalism in crisis?
Saturday, September 14, noon - 5 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor Street West, Room 8200 and 8201
TTC: St. George
In Canada, the economy lurches from job loss to job recovery and back again, while youth unemployment is 14% and the only work available seems to be low-paying “McJobs.” The figures are even worse in other parts of the world, but there is hope. Unemployed young people and migrant workers have been significant to the fierce resistance to austerity in Greece and Spain; we’ve seen incredible strikes by fast food workers in North America and militant protests from those seeking regular hours and steady pay in Africa and Asia. Join us for a day-school on the crisis affecting capitalism and what we can do to fight back.

Toronto Ice Ride
Sun. Sept. 15, 1 p.m.
Meet at Allan Gardens (Gerrard and Jarvis outside the greenhouse) to participate in this critical mass style bike ride.
On September 15th, 2013, countries across the globe will be participating in a historic event to help save the Arctic. In Toronto, we’ll be hosting the largest Ice Ride in the country! As the ice at the top of the world is melting to record lows, oil companies see this melting not as a warning but as a business opportunity. Oil spills will be impossible to clean up in the Arctic’s harsh, fragile environment and so we’re asking for individuals to join us on their bikes, wear white and blue, dress up in Arctic animal themed costumes and help us send a positive message.

Ride4RealFood
Sunday, September 15
Funds raised support better access to fresh, healthy and local food for low-income people living in Toronto. It all happens through the Co-op Cred Program, a partner project of the West End Food Co-op and PARC. There are three cycling routes: a 30 km, a 65 km and a 115 km ride. Like last year, all cycling routes end at the historic McVean Farm for the fabulous McVean Farm Harvest Festival - a culinary celebration of fresh and bbq'd foods (both locally raised and locally grown.) This means that after you bike to the farm you will be treated to an afternoon of locally sourced food, music and kid-friendly fun.
