Bike Lanes on Bloor
Request to re-start the Environmental Assessment comes back to Public Works in October: sign the petition now!
Six councillors along Bloor Street West have called to restart the Environmental Assessment for bike lanes on Bloor in Transportation Services’ 2014 budget and workplan. It's a good start, but why not take it a few steps further? Extend the EA to include Danforth as well. And why not establish a summertime pilot project along a stretch of Bloor-Danforth using paint and bollards? It’s cheap, could be implemented quickly, doesn't require an EA and demonstrates impact.

We will be demanding restoration of the Community Start Up and Maintenance Benefit, supporting the right of First Nations Communities to control delivery of social assistance programs and calling for the raising of the minimum wage in Ontario to $14 an hour and social assistance rates by at least 55%. In place of the endless talk of this Government about 'poverty reduction' we will be taking action.

No Line 9! No Tar Sands Pipelines!

Saturday. October 19, 12 noon
Toronto Metro Convention Centre, 255 Front Street West
Oil giant Enbridge wants to use Line 9, a 38-year old pipeline to pump toxic tar sands east through Ontario and Quebec. Line 9 passes within 50 km of an estimated 9.1 million people, 18 First Nation communities, and 99 towns and cities, including Toronto. From October 16 to 19, the National Energy Board (NEB) will be 'listening' to the public and industry on Line 9 in Toronto. Under Harper, the requirement for environmental assessments has been removed and only the NEB is charged with making the 'decision' on Line 9. To date, the NEB has approved over 99.9% of tar sands projects and is seen as an extension of Big Oil.

Panel Discussion:
Tuesday October 22, 1:30pm – 3:30pm
UofT, William Doo Auditorium, New College , 45 Willcocks Street (St. George + Harbord)

Community Conversation:
Tuesday October 22, 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Barbara Frum Library, 20 Covington Road (Bathurst + Lawrence)

During World War II the Japanese Army forced over 200,000 women from across Asia into a military sexual slavery system; the victims are euphemistically known as ‘comfort women’. Without receiving an official apology from the Japanese government, survivors are still waiting for justice. Lola Fidencia David, 87, will be visiting from the Philippines. Lola Fidencia was 14 when she was forced into the garrison and repeatedly raped by Japanese soldiers. In November 2007, she testified in the Canadian House of Commons, which led to the unanimous passing of Motion 291. Join us in solidarity and conversation.
