Cities for People, Not Cars

I love elections! I love that people are open to talking politics, to talking about the issues that affect them, literally opening their doors to canvassers. I’m not naive - I see how broken the system is, but I still thank all the candidates that have put their names on the ballot, and to all the volunteers that have worked to make this electron relevant.

I’ve been working on Olivia Chow’s campaign for Mayor http://www.oliviachow.ca, and Albert Koehl’s campaign for Councillor. Here’s Albert’s campaign in a nutshell:

"Our priority in this election has been to present new ideas based on new research, new thinking about public roads, and a commitment to building cities for people. I believe that by investing in, and giving priority to transit, complemented by safe cycling and walking we can build a cleaner, fairer, and more beautiful city. We have proposed specific solutions: a transit mall on King and Queen, lower speed limits, using particular funding tools to improve transit, establishing safe cycling routes, and opening up space dominated by car parking for more productive uses."

http://www.votealbertkoehl.com - Check out his fantastic campaign videos which address issues of transit, car parking, bike lanes, car speeds, beautiful city planning and more.

Reflections on a violent day in Ottawa - By Matthew Behrens
For half a day, everyone on lockdown no doubt felt the fear, despair, sadness and fragile sense of mortality that people in Iraq and Syria have experienced daily for decades, an extra punch of which they will soon receive at the hands of Canadian CF-18 bombers. After a long day focused on these gripping events in the nation's capital, I have to wonder if this direct experience of fear and trauma will force us to examine our own addiction to violence as the solution to conflict. Yesterday provides us with an opportunity to reflect on our insidious contribution to the climate of hate, and the chance to disengage from our increasingly militarized culture.

Ottawa shooter tried to rob Vancouver McDonald’s with stick
Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, the person who shot the unfortunate and innocent soldier at the war memorial monument in Ottawa, had tried to get help for an addiction to crack cocaine by committing petty crimes. On his crime spree in Vancouver he attempted to rob a McDonald’s with a pointed stick in order to get arrested so he could be treated for his addiction in jail. He was known by the RCMP to be mentally ill, but he got no help whatsoever. Here’s his sad story - now a sad story for the country and one that is being framed as a religiously-motivated act of terror. http://bc.ctvnews.ca/ottawa-shooter-tried-to-rob-vancouver-mcdonald-s-with-stick-1.2068636

Kill the Messenger
is still playing in Toronto
Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas - ‎1:50‎ ‎4:25‎ ‎8:20‎ ‎10:55‎
This is a dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation's streets...and further alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications. His journey takes him from the prisons of California to the villages of Nicaragua to the highest corridors of power in Washington, D.C. - and draws the kind of attention that threatens not just his career, but his family and his life.

College Street United Church, 452 College St.

Dr. Gorski and others will reveal the systemic and pervasive nature of classism which perpetuates poverty, blames individuals for economic injustices, rejects real change and promotes a widespread reliance on charity to address social issues. The workshop is open to any person or organization committed to eliminating classism and poverty in our communities across Ontario.
