Proposed highway to pave parts of Greenbelt proving controversial
Suggested highway would run from Vaughan to Milton running through the Greenbelt and prime farmland. “We are creating cities based on a very old model which is you have sprawl and so you provide a highway,” he said. “But the conversation has changed across municipalities. Everyone realizes that sprawl and car dependency decrease people’s quality of life,” he said.

Paris plans to ban cars from its city center
The new mayor recently announced an ambitious plan to transform the historic city center into a “semi-pedestrianized” zone where automobile access will be limited to emergency vehicles, residents’ cars, and delivery trucks. She’ll double the number of bike lanes by 2020, implement an electric-powered bikesharing system, and to eliminate diesel cars by 2020 to curb carbon emissions.

Monday, January 12, 7 - 9 p.m.
Skills for Change, 791 St. Clair Ave. West (at Greenside)
Please join us for the second meeting of our Discussion Group on Naomi Klein’s new book, This Changes Everything. Our first meeting in December brought a good turnout and a very stimulating discussion on the book’s Introduction and first two chapters. There seemed to be a lot of interest in finding ways we can use the book’s ideas to spark a serious response to the unfolding climate emergency. Our goal for the January meeting is to read up through the end of Part 2, but if you don’t get that far, please come anyway!
