City councillor pushing for slower speed limits on residential roads
Councillor Josh Matlow, (Ward 22, St. Paul’s), is pushing for lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h on all residential roads across Toronto. Lower speed limits would save lives as Toronto’s “Road to Health” report on pedestrian safety recently noted: A pedestrian hit by a vehicle travelling at 50 km/h has an 85 per cent chance of dying, while a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at 30 km/h has a 5 per cent chance of dying.

Funding Cities With Local Energy: Geothermal Urban Royalties

Green 13 will begin a discussion about how the most efficient heating and cooling systems – district wide ground source geothermal – can play a central role in a new model to provide sustainable funding for transit without raising taxes. By shifting to local geothermal energy sources, Ontarians can stop importing energy that takes jobs and money out of our municipal and provincial economies. Our evening will begin with a presentation explaining what ground source geothermal energy is – hint, it’s hiding just below the surface of our city. This will be followed by a second presentation explaining options and ideas for using geothermal resources to heat homes, create jobs, and pay for Ontario’s transit. Free.

With the recent events in Ferguson MO (as in G20 in Toronto in summer 2010) the reality of militarization of police, equipment and tactics has come to North America. Jeff Halper speaks to this phenomenon in the larger perspective of “Global Pacification System”.  He is a long-time activist, writer and commentator on Israel-Palestine known for his writing on the concepts and practice of “matrix of control,” and “people warehousing” as practised by Israel on the Palestinian population in Occupied Palestinian Territory, especially in Gaza. Greg Albo teaches political economy at the Department of Political Science, York University, Toronto. Robert Latham is director of the Centre for International and Security Studies, and associate professor of Political Science, at York University in Toronto. $10 (no one turned away for lack of funds)

Burying Nuclear Waste in Ontario?

St. Stephens in the Field Church (On College, just west of Spadina, north end of Kensington Mkt)
There has been much concern and mobilization to stop the plan to bury low and intermediate level nuclear waste next to Lake Huron. But what about the high level nuclear waste? Industry hopes to bury it too, they just don’t know where yet. Currently, there are 13 communities in ON and SK involved in the ‘Learn More’ process with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), including one just NW of Toronto. The final promise is a $20 billion dollar construction project to bury at least 4.6 million used fuel bundles. There are significant critiques about burying nuclear waste, and a history of failures for the industry. Come hear from frontline voices who have been resisting both the creation of nuclear waste, and the burial. Speakers include:
