Tell Toronto city council to vote yes for our right to a healthy environment
On May 5, Toronto city council will vote on a declaration to recognize the right to live in a healthy environment. The declaration asks council to take action through regular assessment and public reporting of the city’s progress on key sustainability objectives. It would commit Toronto to make decisions in a way that protects, fulfills and promotes Torontonians' right to a healthy environment — and urges other levels of government to do the same. Tell your councillor to vote yes!

P3s in Motion Conference
Mon. May 4
DoubleTree Hilton Hotel, downtown Toronto
Public-Private Partnerships (P3s) -- also known as Alternative Finance and Procurement -- receive a good deal of attention, both positive and negative, re: financing our transportation systems. For large or complex projects, P3s can provide better value than delivery using traditional procurement methods. But whether we're building, improving or maintaining roads, bridges and transit, not everyone agrees that this is necessarily the best way forward.

Ontario’s Future – Nuclear or Renewable?
Thur. May 7, 7 p.m.
Friends House, 60 Lowther (St. George subway, behind OISE)
We phased out coal. But now Ontario is moving forward with rebuilding 10 nuclear reactors (4 at Darlington and 6 at Bruce), locking us into nuclear for another 4 decades, endangering our Great Lakes and putting us all into deep debt. Fortunately, there are lower cost and lower emission options to meet all our electricity needs in ON. What are the climate implications of nuclear vs. renewables? What are the dangers of nuclear power? What are other countries doing? Free, all welcome. With:
- Dr. Ian Fairlie, expert on radioactivity in the environment, from the UK, www.ianfairlie.org/
- Jack Gibbons, economist and Chair of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance, www.cleanairalliance.org
- Moderated by Angela Bischoff, Greenspiration and OCAA
Co-sponsored by Durham Nuclear Awareness, Greenpeace, Greenspiration, Ontario Clean Air Alliance, Ontario Sustainable Energy Association, SolarShare, Voice of Women for Peace
