Fund the Fight Back vs Social Cleansing of Toronto's Homeless
This month, the 124 bed Hope Shelter at College and McCaul closed its doors, throwing the overcrowded homeless shelter system even deeper into crisis. The City is planning to move hundreds more shelter beds out of the central area so as to relocate them in 'underserved' suburban areas. This developer driven agenda of gentrification and social cleansing poses a huge threat to homeless people. There are few services in the outlying areas of the City and the distances between them would place people in conditions of hardship and danger. OCAP is taking up a fight to prevent the closing of downtown shelters and ensure adequate provision to those who must survive on the streets of this City. Please contribute/donate what you can to help us fund this campaign.

Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-Up Call
with Arthur Manuel, Grand Chief Ron Derrickson, and Naomi Klein
Book Launch and Panel discussion
Tues. May 12, 7 - 9 p.m.
Library Lecture Theatre (LIB72), Ryerson University, 350 Victoria street
Unsettling Canada is built on a unique collaboration between two First Nations leaders, Arthur Manuel and Grand Chief Ron Derrickson. Both men have served as chiefs of their bands in the B.C. interior and both have gone on to establish important national and international reputations. But the differences between them are in many ways even more interesting. Arthur Manuel is one of the most forceful advocates for Aboriginal title and rights in Canada and comes from the activist wing of the movement. Grand Chief Ron Derrickson is one of the most successful Indigenous businessmen in the country. Together the Secwepemc activist intellectual and the Syilx (Okanagan) businessman bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to Canada’s most glaring piece of unfinished business: the place of Indigenous peoples within the country’s political and economic space. The story is told through Arthur’s voice but he traces both of their individual struggles against the colonialist and often racist structures that have been erected to keep Indigenous peoples in their place in Canada. In the final chapters and in the Grand Chief’s afterword, they not only set out a plan for a new sustainable indigenous economy, but lay out a road map for getting there.

Life on the Line: Women Strike at Eaton's 1984-85
Tuesday, May 12, 7pm
United Steelworkers' Hall, 25 Cecil Street
$10 / PWYC
Life on the Line: Women Strike at Eaton’s 1984-85, is a play about the six month long strike of 1,500 retail workers against the T. Eaton Company in the grueling winter and spring of 1984-85. The script is based on the actual words of the strikers from transcripts of extensive interviews with them shortly after the strike ended. Interweaving dialogue, chants and songs (both newly created and traditional union songs), the story of this strike has been brought to life by playwright Pat McDermott, and Vrenia Ivonoffski, director, co-playwright, and composer. It offers an insight into the heart of a women’s strike and tells the story of how standing up for themselves transformed their lives both personally and politically. Co-presented by Steelworkers Hall and Our Times Magazine. Co-sponsored by Workers United Canada Council, an SEIU affiliate.

Hard Truths for Canada about Israel and Palestine
Wednesday, May 13, 7 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St.
Michael Keefer’s new book, Hard Truths for Canada about Israel and Palestine, offers a forceful critique of the near-unanimous support for Israeli state policies expressed by Canada’s political elites. Setting out to help Canadians do what is right in relation to Palestine and Israel, the book demolishes the Harper government’s position, which rests upon falsehoods and myths that have been thoroughly refuted–by Jewish and Israeli scholars and public intellectuals, among others. Keefer shows through analysis of recent events and current tendencies how urgent it is for peaceful international pressure to be exerted to bring Israel into compliance with international law. He argues that it’s time for Canadians to recognize the choices that confront us, and in the face of misrepresentations and slanders, to place ourselves firmly on the side of common decency and of solidarity with the oppressed.

Stop Shock Now
Saturday May 16
Assemble at 1 pm at “The Archer” statue in Nathan Phillips Square in front of City Hall; at 1:15-1:30 pm, we march to the Sheraton, Queen and Bay
CAPA (Coalition Against Psychiatric Assault) is organizing a public protest against electroshock (ECT) at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in Toronto. This protest and many others are being held simultaneously in over 25 cities around the world, an International Day of Protest. Electroshock is a devastating and harmful procedure, always memory destroying and brain-damaging. The decision to target the APA is intentional and appropriate, because this psychiatric organization constantly deceives, minimizes, and lies about the devastating trauma, permanent memory loss and brain damage caused by electroshock.
