Pope Francis’s anticapitalist revolution launches
Pope Francis’s 2015 war cry is to lead a global anticapitalist revolution, a revolution leading billions to take back their planet from a fossil-fuel industry that’s lost its moral compass to the “golden calf” and is destroying its own civilization on Planet Earth. Conservatives, Big Oil, the Far Right and Super rich are very scared. Expect the backlash.

New report scorches Harper's record on democracy
A new report called Dismantling Democracy should be compulsory reading for all Canadian voters before the next election. It gives chapter and verse on the Harper government's multi-pronged efforts to stifle not only legitimate dissent and free speech, but even freedom of thought. The report is from Voices-Voix, a coalition of 200 organizations.

Spotlight on Films from Turtle Island: People of the Ice
Mon. June 22, 6 pm
Papa/Danforth Library, 701 Pape Avenue
(2003, 52 min) For over 4 000 years, the Inuit have lived in harmony with their Arctic environment. In this frozen landscape, survival depends on a deep understanding of the natural world. Today, global warming threatens the very nature of their habitat. As the ice disappears, so does the Inuit culture it is intimately connected to. Ever-changing temperatures have even made predicting the Arctic climate difficult. Will this extraordinarily resilient people be able to adjust to such dramatic change?

Faith and Our Climate: Uniting Generations
Tuesday, June 23, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Isabel Bader Theatre, Victoria College (near Avenue Rd. and Bloor)
2015 is the critical year for action on climate change. 4RG and JustEarth are sponsors of this forum for voters at different ends of the demographic scale. On the one hand you have Grandparents and other seniors, and, at the other, Generation Zed’s. Who are Generation Zed’s? Z is the last letter of our alphabet. Unless action is taken, the demographic generation (18-34) years may be the last generation that lives before Climate Change profoundly impacts our planet. There are solutions. Youth and age must share ideals and expectations to find these solutions. That is why we aim at uniting generations. Faith: an important word to Grandparents/seniors. We will have the inspiration of a courageous Pope, Francis 1 whose much anticipated Encyclical will chart moral imperatives for everyone, of any faith. Representatives of several faiths will be attending to explain how their creeds address moral responsibility for the environment.

Launch: Affordable TTC
Wednesday June 24, 10 am
Nathan Phillips Square, City Hall, 100 Queen Street West.
The Fair Fare Coalition report, Affordable TTC: Ticket to the City is being released on Wednesday June 24. Based on discussions with low-income public transit users, it demonstrates that the existing fare structure is unaffordable for people who depend on it the most. It calls for dramatic reductions for fares for people on social assistance and living on low incomes. This is important now because the City is debating and voting on a Poverty Reduction Strategy on June 30, and then on July. It’s also important because the City will be introducing a plan to address the cost of fares for people on low incomes later in the year.

Cinema Politica Screening: Valentine Road
Thursday, June 25, 7 p.m.
Koffler House (569 Spadina Ave), Room 108
The seaside town of Oxnard, California, was shattered in 2008 by the shooting death of Lawrence “Larry” King, a 15-year-old biracial, LGBTQ student. The killer? His white, 14-year-old crush, Brandon McInerney. Was this a hate crime—retaliation against unwanted advances—or something more complex, entrenched in the community and society at large? Did flamboyant Larry, who liked to crochet, wear makeup and don heels, push his attacker, an emerging white supremacist, over the edge? It sure made for catchy headlines and drew attention to the plight of LGBTQ teens, as well as the overwhelmed educational and juvenile justice systems. But sensational press coverage only scratched the surface of the real story. Valentine Road delves deeper, to explore the complicated issues of accountability, sympathy and deviance at the heart of a legal defence that posited a murder victim can be the cause of his own murder. Free. Free Popcorn. Wheelchair accessible space.
