Hi everyone. Hope you had a good summer. I'd like to thank my intern Geneva
from the U of T Enviro Studies department for helping pull together this
newsletter. With her help we'll try to get it out to you regularly. If you
have ideas on how to automate this, or how to get it out more broadly,
please let me know. Happy autumn.

It's Election Time!
All hands on deck. Help your favourite candidate get elected. Lots of
volunteers are required to get people elected. I'm working on Linda
McQuaig's campaign. Tell me whose campaign you're working on - I'm curious.
LeadNow's campaign Vote Together is a campaign I recommend. They're
organizing in key ridings around the country to beat the conservative
candidate. In Toronto they're targeting to unseat Joe Oliver with both foot
and phone canvasses.

The LEAP Manifesto - A Call for a Canada Based on Caring for the Earth and

The time for energy democracy has come. We call for a Canada based on caring
for each other and the planet, moving swiftly to a post-carbon future,
upholding Indigenous rights, and pursuing economic justice for all. 100%
renewable electricity by 2035.

Climate Change and Rule of Law
In this lecture Senior Fellow Roger Cox, in his first North American
appearance, and a panel of Canadian legal experts discuss the possible role
of Canadian judges in ordering governments to lower carbon emission and live
up to international law commitments. Mr. Cox, lawyer for the Urgenda
Foundation, designed and was the lead attorney for the suit by 900 Dutch
citizens resulting in the Court of The Hague's ground-breaking ruling in
June 2015 that ordered the Netherlands to reduce the country's carbon
emissions 25% by 2020. Citizens in other European countries - party to the
UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - are commencing suits based on
the Urgenda ruling.

Defend Shelter Space
Monday, September 21, noon
City Hall (Bay & Queen)
Despite many promises to deal with the dreadful overcrowding in Toronto's
homeless shelters, the City policy of keeping occupancy levels at 90% or
below has still not been put into effect. Even in the summer months, the
shelters are overflowing. At the same time, a process of social cleansing is
underway, with plans being developed to drive the homeless out of the
downtown core. The 124 bed Hope Shelter at College and McCaul closed during
April and no replacement facility has yet been found. City Council will now
be asked to approve plans to move hundreds of beds out from George Street as
part of a redevelopment that will mean the end of Seaton House and the
School House Shelter. Nothing has been guaranteed in terms of replacing
these beds. OCAP is demanding that no shelters be closed and the George
Street redevelopment be put on hold until the City has replacement locations
lined up in the same area of the City.
