The Ins and Outs of Water in Toronto
Tuesday, October 20, 7 p.m.
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St.
What is happening in your drinking water? What happens to our water when we have finished with it? What the city is doing to handle worsening storms? Karen Buck will present how Toronto's waterfront remains an Area of Concern, in spite of regulations and actions taken by the city, how Tritium pollution from Ontario nuclear plants affects our drinking water quality and, finally, how actions taken by Toronto citizen groups and citizens have had positive results. Aliss Terpstra will explain how water fluoridation is intentional pollution of both drinking water and the environment. She will expose the industrial waste chemicals being used; their synergistic effect on treatment infrastructure and water quality and explain the politics behind the fluoridation policy. Reel Activism is sponsored by Beit Zatoun and the Toronto Chapter of the Council of Canadians.

The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction is Not a Disease
The Canadian Harm Reduction Network presents Dr. Marc Lewis
Thursday, October 22, 1 pm
College St. United Church, 452 College Street at Bathurst
Marc Lewis quit using opiates at age 30. In his 2011 book Memoirs of an Addicted Brain: A Neuroscientist Examines his Former Life on Drugs, Lewis used himself as a case study of substance abuse on effects of various drugs on the human brain and the progress of his addiction. His new book, The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction is Not a Disease, is a collection of other people's personal stories, which serve as platforms to describe addiction - and being able to overcome it - in the context of brain science. By shaking up the established "disease model" of addiction with his research and theories, Lewis is sure to stir up a lot of controversy with his book, among both general public and scientific communities. Free.
