Nuclear power continues to push up electricity rates
Ontario’s residential electricity rates will rise on November 1st. 45% of the rise is due to subsidies for our aging nuclear reactors. But instead of getting the message about the high costs of Ontario’s heavy nuclear dependence, the Wynne government is planning to rebuild 10 of our aging nuclear reactors over the next 15 years. If Premier Wynne proceeds with this plan, our electricity rates will go through the roof. Fortunately, there are lower cost options to keep our lights on, namely, energy conservation and efficiency, competitively procured wind energy and other made-in-Ontario renewable power, and water power imports from Quebec. Please send a letter to Premier Wynne here and ask her to pursue ALL of our lower cost electricity options before she signs another deal with OPG or Bruce Power that will make us dependent on outdated nuclear power for the next 30 years or more.

Highway of Tears
Mon, Oct. 26, 6 pm
Bloor Hot Doc Theatre, 506 Bloor Street West
Highway of Tears is an important story about the many disappearances and deaths of young, mostly Aboriginal women along northern British Columbia’s Highway 16. Over 18 unsolved cases have been linked to this stretch of road, but these reflect only a fraction of the over 1,000 Indigenous women in Canada who have vanished or been murdered since the 1960s. Through the moving personal stories of the victims, director Matthew Smiley investigates the systemic problems that contribute to these women’s fates, why so many of their cases go unsolved, and how we must speak up for those who no longer can.

Burning Water - Fractured Earth, Fractured Lives
Monday, Oct. 26, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Lillian H. Smith library, 239 College Street
A Water Docs screening and discussion. At Fiona Lauridsen's farm, just outside the hamlet of Rosebud, Fiona and her family got skin burns in the shower. Fiona claims that EnCana, Canada's largest natural gas company, contaminated the aquifer by drilling (fracking) for coal bed methane, a new source of natural gas extraction that often uses chemicals for drilling. As gas wells sprout up across North America, and all around Rosebud, the Lauridsen family struggles to stay together and remain part of their community, at the same time confronting the dark truth of what may be happening beneath the surface.

Of The Land – Movie Night
Thurs, Oct. 29, 7 pm
Carrot Common Room, 348 Danforth Ave
Of The Land is a film about our current food industry in Canada and the US and how it compares to traditional farming models and organic operations. Within the last half century, our agriculture and food has changed more than it has changed before in several thousand years. New technologies and scientific ingenuity have given rise to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other novel foods. Concerns have been raised about the safety of GMOs in our food supply, and organic farmers have consistently been under attack by large corporate farming interests who seek to dominate the food industry and run family farms out of business. This film looks at our current food system, as well as a variety of smaller, organic options available to consumers who want to support sustainable farming methods.

From Greece to Portugal to Corbyn’s Labour Party: Openings and Closures on the European Left
Sun. Nov. 1, 2 p.m.
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (at Bloor)
After decades of uninterrupted neoliberal austerity across Europe, in recent years a new left alternative has begun to take shape. Whereas generations had turned to Latin America and other parts of the global capitalist periphery for signs of hope for a viable socialist alternative, today working people have once again turned to confront the capitalist classes in their own countries, and to challenge the vision of a neoliberal Europe with a reinvigorated left politics that seeks to build social movements by working both within and outside the state.
