New Fossil of the Day Award: Canada back in climate bad books
Canada shares 'prize' with U.S. for rejecting appeal from developing countries. Under Harper, Canada brought home the fossil of the year award seven times in a row. Justin Trudeau was expected to bring Canada into the twenty first century at climate talks in Paris by actually bringing something to the table to make a positive difference. Instead, we once again come home with a fossil award for obstructing rather than facilitating progress.

Five lessons Toronto could learn from New York’s transportation shift
Cars don’t shop, people do. Think mobility of people, not movement of cars. And remember that taking space from cars – whether to offer safe routes for cyclists or to serve as plazas – can boost the fortunes of area businesses.

Rally: End race and class based profiling by the Toronto Police Service
Thur. Dec. 17, noon
Toronto Police Headquarters, Dundas and Yonge
Toronto Police are doing Immigration's Dirty Work, #RefugeesWelcome. We have evidence that Toronto Police calls Canada Border Services Agency 100 times per week, that is more than police forces in Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa combined. Four out of the five times these calls are made for people without an immigration warrant! That means that Toronto Police look at witnesses or victims of crime, or just every days residents that they stop and quiz for no reason, and based on the colour of their skin, and their accent, call Border Services to see if that person has immigration status or not. This is racist policing at its worst. And it must stop. This collaboration between Toronto Police and immigration enforcement means that racial profiling of non-status people of colour can result in endless detentions or even deportation to suffering, sometimes death.

Lecture: The ISIS Crisis After the Paris Massacre: How Should the World Respond?
Thursday December 17, 7 pm
Noor Cultural Centre, Auditorium, 123 Wynford Dr.
The November 13, 2015 Paris massacre is widely viewed as a turning point in the war against ISIS. Global attention has refocused on this extremist group and further attacks in major Western cities are expected. Before a coherent strategy against ISIS can be formulated, however, a clear understanding of the roots of this organization is required. What is the best framework of analysis to explain the rise and expansion of ISIS? Is the problem with ISIS fundamentally due to something inherent in Islam or Arab Culture? Or is the problem with ISIS fundamentally about the legacy of US intervention in Iraq in 2003? Did a failed US policy toward the Middle East inadvertently create ISIS as some have argued? What is the best entry point to understand this vexed problem and what strategy should the international community adopt to effectively deal with the menace of the "Islamic State"? With Dr Nader Hashemi. Also featuring Dr Mohammad Fadel (University of Toronto Faculty of Law) as discussant.
