Public Space for Public Life: Conversations about the Future of Downtown
Wed. April 6, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue (Wellesley and St. George, U of T)
As Downtown continues to grow – with more people living, working and visiting the core – we need to make sure that growth is complemented by the things that will make and keep Downtown great for all. Public spaces set the stage for daily social interaction in the city, as people travel to work or school, move around to shop or seek out a bite to eat, take in a festival, get active in a park or just sit back and enjoy public life. How might the quality of public space in the Downtown be improved? What can be done to create an open space network with stronger connectivity between its parts?
You are invited to join Toronto’s Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat and CBC Radio One’s Mary Wiens in a conversation about the future of Downtown

Rally for Food Security and a Raise in Social Assistance Rates
Sat. April 9, 3 p.m.
Meet outside Food Basics, 238 Wellesley Street East (between Parliament and Sherbourne)
The Ontario Government just announced a miserable 1.5% increase in social assistance rates to take effect in the autumn. Right now, the official rate of inflation is 2% but food prices are going up at 4%, with vegetables increasing at an astounding 18.2%. People in poverty have to spend a huge part of their incomes on food, so this situation means that paying the rent and eating a healthy diet has become totally impossible. A crisis of hunger, beyond the ability of the food banks to deal with, is being created that must be responded to. The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) is demanding that the Government of Kathleen Wynne respond to this crisis with an emergency increase in social assistance rates that reflects the real cost of living increases people are facing. Show your support and help us build the fight against poverty and hunger in Ontario.
