Ontario government is honest about climate change and fossil fuel lobbyists aren’t happy

The Ontario climate plan gets the thumbs up
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/rob-commentary/the-ontario-climate-plan-should-provinces-follow-or-flee/article30097929/
Angela's note: I support phasing out natural gas and further electrification, but we should be supplying the electricity with water power imports from QC and made-in-ON renewable electricity rather than dangerous and high cost nuclear power which is the province's plan.
Please Sign the Petition to close the ancient Pickering nuclear station when its license expires in 2018 rather than extend its life 'till 2024, the gov't's plan.

And if you’re up for helping distribute close-pickering.ca leaflets, either with a group blitz or on your own, contact mer: angela at cleanairalliance.org. Thanks.

People's Climate Plan
In May and June 2016, Members of Parliament across the country will hold public climate consultations. The Trudeau government will put forward a new national climate strategy for Canada before the end of 2016. We already know that oil lobbyists are gearing up to try and weaken any attempts to take bold action, and it’s up to us to make sure the voices of the people are heard first. The People’s Climate Plan calls for these principles to be at the core of the National Climate Strategy:
• A national climate plan that aligns with the science of climate change and ensures Canada meets its commitments to a 1.5°C world by keeping its fossil fuels reserves in the ground.
• A national plan that builds a 100% renewable energy economy by 2050, creating over a million clean, safe and rewarding jobs.
• A national plan that enshrines justice & reconciliation for Indigenous peoples, ensures no worker is left behind in the transition to a clean energy economy, and takes leadership from those hit hardest by the climate crisis.

Veg News
The Dutch Government made an historic recommendation to its citizens recently to limit their meat consumption to two servings per week, and replace the protein with vegan sources, citing the high-carbon footprint of animal agriculture as the motivation behind the new recommendation. The Netherlands joins many countries around the world—including Sweden and most recently the UK—that have released dietary guidelines that slash recommendations for the consumption of animal products for environmental and health reasons.

Jaguar Chocolate Workshop
Thursday, May 26, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
ChocoSol (1131 St Clair Ave West)
Jaguar cacao, ye li, patastle, pataxte, theobromae bicoloris: these are some of the English, Chinanteco, Nahuatl, and Linnean names for a cacao seed that grows in the ancient forest gardens. Not only are the forest gardens habitat for fauna like the jaguar, they provide ways for Indigenous communities to create safety belts of communal use around natural areas. This is beyond conservation, and is rooted in millennia of ecological and spiritual stewardship. Today, ChocoSol is proud to be part of a small cadre of chocolatiers, chefs, farmers, and artisans participating in the regeneration of the jaguar cacao, both through seedling planting and intercultural encounter, dialogue, and exchange, as well as through recipe development and intercultural learning. Tickets: $50 - must register in advance: universe.com/jaguarchocolateworkshops

Protest War Criminals Coming to Toronto: Henry Kissinger, Shimon Peres and Michael Oren
Thur. May 26, 4:30 — 6 p.m.
Metro Toronto Convention Centre
On May 26, war criminals Henry Kissinger, Shimon Peres and Michael Oren will be in Toronto to participate in the so-called "Spirit of Hope,” an event hosted by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre claiming to promote human rights, justice, freedom and democracy -- all of which these criminals denied to their victims (see below). We call on people of conscience to jointly let these criminals know they are not welcome in Toronto -- and to demand justice for decades of unimaginable crimes against humanity perpetrated during their reigns of violence, terror and intimidation. Let’s give them the “welcome” they deserve!

Counting Sheep - Revolution is Coming
A Guerrilla Folk Opera
May 26 - June 5
296 Broadview
Counting Sheep is a deeply personal retelling of the Maidan in Ukraine, an immersive Ukrainian folk opera set to the sounds of beloved guerilla-folk party-punk band The Lemon Bucket Orkestra. It is January 2014. Mark Marczyk touches down in Kyiv and is quickly thrust into a nation on the eve of Revolution, a volatile whirlwind of tragedy mixed with hope, solidarity torn apart by brutal violence. Counting Sheep is a strikingly visceral exploration into the politics of revolution, beating with the heart of a people yearning for a better tomorrow. It is a stirring call-to-action, an affirmation of the human condition amidst a country in disrepair.

Books on Bathurst - on 2 wheels
Sat. May 28, 3 - 6 p.m.
Starts at Fort York Library, 190 Fort York Blvd & Bathurst Street
See the city from two wheels and hear the city from local authors as we travel along Bathurst and celebrate renowned authors and activists Jane Jacobs and June Callwood. Hop on The Reading Line and then hop off if you can’t stay for the full afternoon. Our goal for the #BookRide is to raise awareness of a street in the city that is seeing increased density from the south with the Fort York condominiums and redevelopments along Bathurst.
This much-used north–south corridor requires improved bike infrastructure. Travel with us and see if you don’t agree that a street with libraries, schools, daycares, residences and businesses requires a complete street focus.
