Calling for an end to liquid nuclear waste convoys
More than 20 North American non-governmental organizations in asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Barack Obama to postpone or cancel an unprecedented series of shipments of highly radioactive liquid waste from Ontario to South Carolina along public roads and over bridges that cross the Great Lakes. If a large-scale accident occurred, it could affect the health of millions of residents that rely on the Great Lakes for drinking water, including large cities like Toronto.

Canada says NO in historic UN Vote on Nuclear Ban Treaty
The First Committee on Disarmament and International Security of the UN General Assembly today passed an historic resolution, mandating the launch in 2017 of negotiations for a legally binding instrument prohibiting nuclear weapons. Canada’s vote against this resolution puts this country, quite simply, on the wrong side of history. Shame on the Trudeau gov't.

Friends & Families for Safe Streets Launches to End Road Violence and Support Those Impacted Most
FSS is working to end traffic violence in Toronto by changing laws, enforcement, street design, public attitudes and traffic culture to make our vibrant streets safer and more equitable for all road users, while supporting those who are survivors. Our members are survivors of
traffic collisions and friends and families whose loved ones have been killed or severely injured by careless drivers and dangerous conditions on Toronto's streets. We work with legislators, planners, police, transit authorities, active transportation advocates, public health professionals, and the travelling public to improve the design of our streets, the enforcement of safety laws, and the traffic culture that influences how we view serious injuries and fatalities. Our goal is to end traffic violence in Toronto.

Peace Has No Borders - Special Film Screening
Tues. Nov. 1, 7 - 9 p.m.
Steelworkers, 25 Cecil
A feature documentary about American war resisters. Between 1965-1973, over 50,000 Americans made their way to Canada, refusing to participate in the Vietnam War. Forty years later, Canada has another moral choice – whether to give refuge to U.S. veterans of the Iraq War who crossed the border instead of serving another tour. Caught between two countries, today’s war resisters have the support of the public, but are still ghting for the political will that could allow them to remain in Canada. Making Criticism a Crime: Criminal Libel and Free Speech
Tues. Nov. 1, noon - 1:30 p.m.
Rogers Communications Centre at Ryerson, 80 Gould, Room 103
Criminal libel is an archaic law that permits the state to launch criminal proceedings against an individual whose comments the state finds offensive. Lisa Taylor will reveal new research that shows a resurgence of criminal libel prosecutions for criticism of the police and others in power or authority. Should this old law be scrapped or is it necessary to curb unwanted expression?

All Out: Support the National Student Day of Action - U of T Rally for Free Education
Wed. Nov. 2
noon - 1 p.m., Sid Smith Hall - 100 St. George Street
1 - 4 p.m., GTA March and Action at Queen’s Park
Canada’s post-secondary education system needs to change. Ontario students currently pay the highest tuition fees in the country and students and their families are taking on massive loans to fund their education, graduating with thousands of dollars in debt. On November 2, students from all three UofT campuses are coming together to take action and demand free education for ALL! Students are mobilizing across Canada to make post-secondary education universally accessible to ALL – a right to be enjoyed regardless of where you are born, how old you are or the background you come from; everyone should be able to access higher education and skills training without the barrier of cost or the fear of incurring debt.

Energy Democracy
Thur. Nov. 3, 7 - 9 p.m.
401 Richmond St. (at Spadina)
Join Craig Morris for a discussion of why the benefits of the energy transition will make the world a better place — and why climate campaigners should view lower CO2 emissions as the co-benefit. The climate and energy debate generally focuses on carbon emissions, labeling other aspects as “co-benefits.” But conventional industry is ready to discontinue the energy transition whenever society is. Without a bottom-up push, there will be less innovation and sustained commitment. And a purely technical focus on breakthroughs, overlooks “sufficiency” — changes in behavior and walkable cities are more important than electric vehicles. Free.

Our Current Understanding of the Ocean's Role in Climate
2016 J. Tuzo Wilson Public Lecture
Thursday Nov. 3, 8 pm
Isabel Bader Theatre, 93 Charles Street West, Museum subway, East exit
In 1800 Count Rumford ascertained the ocean's meridional overturning circulation from a single profile of ocean temperature constructed with the use of a rope, a wooden bucket and a rudimentary thermometer. Over two centuries later, data from floats, gliders and moorings deployed across the North Atlantic has transformed our understanding of this overturning circulation, popularly termed the ocean 'conveyor belt'. While Rumford appreciated the role of the ocean's overturning in redistributing heat, today we understand the crucial role that this circulation plays in sequestering anthropogenic carbon dioxide in the deep ocean. In this talk I will discuss our current understanding of the ocean's overturning circulation, its role in our global climate and what we currently do and don't understand about the mechanisms controlling its temporal change.

The Great Canadian Tax Dodge

It is estimated that between 100 and 170 billion dollars leaves Canada every year, untaxed. Much of it is siphoned off to Canadian-made offshore tax havens. "The Great Canadian Tax Dodge" documents the birth of the Canadian Tax Fairness movement and examines the issue of tax avoidance, exposing the sophisticated corporate strategies and tax loopholes commonly used to legally avoid tax.

Chornobyl 30 Years After: Energy, Environment, Policy
Fri. Nov. 4, 2:30 - 5:30 p.m.
108N, North House, Munk School of Global Affairs, 1 Devonshire Place, U of T
The explosion at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant on April 26, 1986 continues to have serious economic, social, and biological consequences for the inhabitants of the affected territories and beyond. The problems caused by the disaster in Ukraine and policies developed to address them have been further complicated by geopolitical conflict and the economic and humanitarian crisis this conflict has precipitated. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the disaster, this panel brings together scholars to discuss issues such as the future nuclear energy in Ukraine, the impact of radiation on wildlife in Chornobyl’s exclusion zone, and the management of displaced people. In situating their research, panelists will draw comparisons between the Chornobyl and Fukushima accidents, and between the Chornobyl accident and Ukraine’s Anti-Terrorist Operation.

The Best Democracy Money Can Buy
Nov. 4 - 10
Hot Docs Cinema, 506 Bloor (at Bathurst)
When Donald Trump says, “This election is rigged”—he should know. His friends are rigging it. Rolling Stone investigative reporter Greg Palast busted Jeb Bush for stealing the 2000 election by removing black voters from Florida’s electoral rolls. Now, Palast is back to take a deep dive into the Republicans’ dark operation, Crosscheck—designed to steal votes by this November. This real life detective story is told in a film noir style with animations (from the cartoonist behind Disney's Who Framed Roger Rabbit comic books), secret documents, hidden cameras and a little help from some familiar Law & Order: Special Victims Unit detectives!
