First They Came
- By Pastor Martin Niemoller
First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me.

How the Active Many Can Overcome the Ruthless Few
“Violence is the method by which the ruthless few can subdue the passive many. Nonviolence is a means by which the active many can overcome the ruthless few.”

Tell Trudeau: Welcome Those Fleeing Violence and Deportation Under Trump
A petition by No One Is Illegal - Toronto. Canada doesn’t accept any asylum seekers who come to Canada via the US, because of an outdated law called the “Safe Third Country Agreement”. This law prevents most people fleeing violence or persecution from seeking refuge in Canada if they land in the US -- deemed a “safe country” under the law -- first.

Trudeau says Canada will take refugees banned by U.S.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/trudeau-canada-refugees-banned-u-s/
Note: "While it is good to finally see trudeau say that Canada should be a welcoming place for those fleeing persecution, he needs to actually put this into practice. Step one: reversing this abominable decision made on Xmas Eve when no one heard about it. Step two: cancel the thousands of deportations on tap, many to countries where there is a risk of torture and cruel treatment. Step three: end immigration detention, including for hundreds of children. (Many more steps needed as well!!!) Almost anything looks better than trump, but Trump should not be the baseline against which we judge policies and politicians. One would hope we could aim a bit higher.” - Matthew Behrens

Get the word out on transit cuts
The TTC is being forced to cut service and break overcrowding standards because all levels of government are failing to invest in transit. Now is the time to take action because City Council will be deciding how much money to give our seriously underfunded transit agency on February 15 and 16, which is just three weeks away. View and share maps on the proposed service cuts, and find out how you can get involved:

We Support Refugees + Muslims • Peaceful protest/shut down of the US Consulate
Mon. Jan. 30, 8 a.m. - noon
US Consulate, 360 University Avenue (n. of Queen)
Donald Trump is passing the most racist Executive Orders the world has seen in decades. Innocent refugees, many of them children, are trapped in airports and being turned back to a dangerous home.. because of their religion, their language, their skin colour. For all those who believe in a compassionate world, the time to act is now. We will shut down the building peacefully, sitting in silence • No speeches • We'll let people out of the building, but not in • No violence. This event is open to anyone. We are acting as allies, and not speaking on behalf of anyone, nor claiming to be a voice for this issue.

Fracking: The Future of American Energy
Tues. Jan. 31, 4 - 5:30 pm.
208N, North House, Munk School of Global Affairs, 1 Devonshire Place, U of T The technological innovation of hydraulic fracturing drilling, commonly known as ‘fracking’, has revolutionized global energy markets overnight, but it quickly became a victim of its own success as global oil prices plunged in late 2014. This industry went from boom to bust in only a few short years. Despite this, it is still the future of American energy and soon to spread throughout the entire world. This presentation serves as an introduction to fracking, answering the following questions: What is it? How it did it come about? Why is it so important? And what are the implications—economic, social, and environmental—for the local communities where it occurs?

Stop Garbage Privatization - Pack City Hall
Tues. Jan. 31. day and night in Council Chambers, Queen and Bay, Toronto City Hall
Toronto City Council will vote on Mayor Tory's plan to contract out the public collection of solid waste East of Yonge Street. Currently the members of CUPE Local 416 do residential and other solid waste collection in every community from downtown to Scarborough. Mayor Tory is driving an agenda to contract out this work. 1. Writing and/or calling your City Councillor. You can do this by dialing 311, or going to http://bit.ly/1CwEd8X, to find your Councillor. 2. Help pack City Hall day and night on Tuesday January 31st.
3. Visit Local 416 website at https://kickedtothecurb.ca to sign their petition.

Give Our Children a Future: Rally for Climate Justice
Wed. Feb. 1, 2 - 5 p.m.
100 St. George St. (Sydney Smith Hall, U of T)
Does Trudeau's environmental inaction drive you crazy? Do you fear for what a Trump presidency will mean for our climate and our future? Do you wish that our leaders would finally start acting like climate change is the greatest threat facing humanity? Join us for a rally at 2 before we march to Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland’s constituency office to rally for climate justice and climate action! The march coincides with the launch of our advocacy document, Climate Change and Canadian Children: The Government of Canada’s obligations to stop making it worse. Climate change is an intergenerational injustice. Our document points out that the youth of today and those still unborn are inheriting a world that will be markedly worse due to the greed and the negligence of those profiting and prospering today. Sponsored by the University of Toronto Environmental Action (UTEA).

Congo and Cell phones: The Next Coltan War Is In Our Hands
Thur. Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m. lecture, 7:30 doc screening
Alliance Française, 24 Spadina Rd (N. of Bloor)
Frank Poulsen’s 2010 documentary. Prior to the screening, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., there will be a lecture (french) and debate entitled Congo: the next coltan war is in our hands, hosted by author Blaise Ndala. We love our cell phones and the selection between different models has never been bigger. But the production of phones has a dark, bloody side. By buying so-called conflict minerals the phone companies are financing the civil war in DR Congo that, according to human rights organizations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II. The illegal mine industry is controlled by armed groups. The war will continue as long as armed groups can finance their warfare by selling minerals that end up in our phones.

C-51 National Day of Action - Trudeau We’re Watching You
Saturday, February 4, 2 - 3 pm
Trinity-Bellwood’s Park (Bloor and Christie)
It's been two years since news broke around the controversial and dangerous Bill C-51. Thousands of us mobilized, signing petitions, calling our MPs, and taking to the streets. We prevented the worst parts of the bill from seeing the light of day - but Harper still used his majority to pass the law, despite overwhelming public opposition. And now? The Liberals have promised to repeal the "worst parts" of C-51, but we are still waiting. While we wait, we hear frightening reports. Reporters in Quebec have been put under police surveillance.[1] A VICE reporter is facing jail time for refusing to disclose a confidential source.[2] New powers under C-51 are already being used by secretive spy agencieis.[3] We are reminded, time and again, that these agencies' powers need to be limited - and that we need strong oversight to prevent abuse.
We can't let the fight against Bill C-51 be forgotten, and our friends at the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression are bringing together a range of groups for another National Day of Action.
