New Data Show Lack of Efficacy for Antidepressants
Existing evidence for antidepressant effectiveness is minimal and at a high risk for bias. “SSRIs might have statistically significant effects on depressive symptoms, but all trials were at high risk of bias and the clinical significance seems questionable. SSRIs significantly increase the risk of both serious and non-serious adverse events. The potential small beneficial effects seem to be outweighed by harmful effects.”

Ban This Series
Monday, March 6 - Wednesday, March 8
Hot Docs, 506 Bloor Street West
Hot Docs will share stories from the seven nations whose citizens were denied entry into the U.S. due to a presidential executive order issued on January 27, 2017, in a new program titled #BanThisSeries. Living under a 24-hour news cycle, it can be difficult to remember that every human on earth shares the same intensity of feeling-that each person has a life they care about as much as we care about ours. There's a moment we're trying to capture: friends mugging for the camera (The War Show), frustration at not being able to fund an important project ( Libya in Motion), a teenaged girl wishing her parents were Michael Jackson and Rihanna (Sonita). The moment is when we recognize ourselves in someone else, when we see they are as deserving of love and protection as the people in our lives. Free.

Trump’s actions have also deepened the colonial oppression and exploitation of Indigenous communities. Sandi Wemigwase, Desmond Cole, Kike Roach and Haroon Siddiqui will discuss Trump’s actions and their consequences for women, racialized and Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond, and ways to resist his agenda.

Antartica: Ice and Sky
Fri. March 10 - 16
Bloor Hot Docs (Bloor and Bathurst)
From the director of March of the Penguins comes this extraordinary encounter with the awe-inspiring and strange landscapes of Antarctica. With sweeping cinematography, we are introduced to the story of pioneering climate scientist Claude Lorius and his ground-breaking findings. Now 83, he reflects on his adventurous life and love of the natural world he has seen change before his very eyes. A bittersweet tribute to a life of passion, reflections on Lorius’s formidable career are set against delightful and breathtaking encounters with penguins, ice floes and shooting stars. Antarctica: Ice & Sky is both a beautifully personal biography and a provocative call to action.

Meet me on the Beach – to Call for the Closure of the Pickering Nuclear Station
☢ Sat. March 11, 2 p.m.
☢ Pickering Public Beach (south end of Liverpool Road)
To Commemorate the 6th Anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear meltdown of 3 reactors, join us on the Beach to call for the closure of the 6-reactor Pickering Nuclear Station in 2018. Bring your banners, kids and friends. We’ll bring speakers, music and cameras. With your help, we’ll record YOUR voices telling our Members of Provincial Parliament that we want Pickering closed in 2018 when its current licence expires – before we have our own Fukushima catastrophe in the middle of our community. Pickering is one of the oldest and largest nuclear stations in the world. Its current licence expires in 2018. OPG has applied for yet another licence extension – this time till 2028. But we have much lower cost and safer alternatives to meet our electricity needs, including water power from Quebec. We’re calling on the Ontario government to close the Pickering nuclear station in 2018 when its current licence expires. Sponsored by Durham Nuclear Awareness and Ontario Clean Air Alliance
