The Stairs

Canadian Film Forum screening of Hugh Gibson's 2016 documentary followed by
discussion with the filmmaker. The Stairs tells the story of Marty, Greg and
Roxanne, each of whom survived decades of street-involvement in Toronto's
Regent Park. Using their experiences to ease the paths of others, each works
in public health in their old neighbourhood while struggling to maintain
their newly-found stability. Told over five years, The Stairs defies
stereotypes about drug use, sex work and homelessness through an intimate

Disarming Conflict: How Wars End

Wars fought over the past quarter century have been a spectacular failure.
The overwhelming majority end in military stalemate and are settled at the
negotiating table, with the grievances that led to the war still unresolved.
Famed peace activist Ernie Regehr shows that force cannot simply override or
transcend the social, political, and economic realities of conflict. War
prevention, Regehr argues, is more successful when security policies address
the conditions that most directly affect people’s lives and that are most
instrumental in generating deep grievances and the despairing conclusion
that there are no alternatives to the violence. Disarming Conflict sets out
approaches, initiatives, and policies that steer away from the futility of
fighting and promote non-military efforts towards “winning the peace.”  Free

observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and
killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa,

the day in 1966, calling on the international community to redouble its
efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. Join a focused
discussion on the kind of future we want to share together as Canadians in

could be? You're not alone. Statistics suggest that work is interfering more
and more with people's personal time, and that stress and burnout are at
near-epidemic levels. The cost to organizations and governments is in the
billions, and the cost to workers comes not only in the form of lower job
effectiveness, but often in their mental and physical well-being. Job
demands, technology, and organizational norms and culture tie people to
their work in a manner that is unprecedented in modern times, but the
question is: Are we really working as smart as we can? In spite of recent
advances in some countries (e.g., Sweden and France) the answer seems to be
no. In this talk, Prof. Trougakos will share ways in which you can work
smarter, be more productive, and live a healthier life, while actually
