Anti/Fascism in the USA and Elsewhere

We are living in troubling times. The election of Donald Trump not only
speaks to the current state of US politics, but to an ongoing shift across
the Western world. In Europe far-right and nationalist parties are making
electoral gains not seen since the Second World War, while their street
level movements are growing in size and influence by the day. While Canada
has its own unique history of reactionary movements, the far-right here has
been emboldened by the events south of the border; racists are increasing
their public activities, and attempts are being made to grow white
nationalist movements and far-right groups at a grassroots level.
Anti-immigrant and anti-refugee propaganda on the streets is becoming more
common, and everyday instances of Islamophobic violence are intensifying –
most notably the January shooting at a Quebec City mosque. In the United
States, the election of Donald Trump has been huge catalyst for the
far-right. His campaign found supporters in everyone from the KKK, armed
militia movements, to neo-Nazi street gangs. White Nationalism has seen its
biggest growth in decades, and now includes a slew of new faces, including
hipsters, 'Men's Rights' activists, campus groups, and internet trolls. Most
notable of this cesspit has been the fascists of so-called 'Alt-Right',
whose influence now goes directly to the White House, via Trump's closest
adviser, Steve Bannon. Trump's campaign and its aftermath has seen an
explosion of activity from these groups – hate crimes have skyrocketed and
confrontations with antifascists have become increasingly violent. How did
we get here? Why has the far-right broken through at this time? How can we
understand the history, politics, and practices of the far-right, and what
does it look like in the US from the Presidency to the streets? And what are
people doing to resist?

Sleep Out at John Tory's: Shelter Now
Saturday April 22 and Sunday April 23

It has been a terrible winter for Toronto's homeless. The shelters have seen
appalling levels of overcrowding and even the warming centres and drop ins
have been hard pressed to deal with the numbers seeking a place of refuge.
The overcrowding has caused four deaths and homeless people have been
hospitalized with hypothermia. Throughout these dreadful months, Mayor John
Tory and the bureaucrats at City Hall have refused to open additional space.
Now, the warming centres and volunteer-run 'Out of the Cold' facilities will
be closing for the year. There will be even fewer options available to
people trying to survive on streets. The City must open enough new spaces
immediately to ensure that the policy of not running the shelters above 90%
occupancy is actually in effect. They must ensure that enough low barrier
and harm reduction spaces are available so that people can actually access
the shelter system. At this critical time, we are going back to John Tory's
multi-million condo home for a sleep out to drive home the need for shelters
for the homeless in a City that drips with wealth. Come out at 7 for food
and entertainment and stay for as long as you can to help us win the right
to shelter for those Tory and his friends are abandoning to the streets.
What to bring: If you can, bring blankets, sleeping bags, and other things
to keep yourself warm through the night. We'll have sleeping bags with us
for those who don't have them. There will also be warm drinks and snacks
throughout the night.

Chernobyl Anniversary: Film screening and discussion

To commemorate the 31st Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe,
join us for a film screening of the 2012 documentary ‘The Atomic States of
America’. On April 26, 1986, a nuclear reactor in Pripyat, Ukraine suffered
a catastrophic power increase, leading to explosions in its core. This
dispersed large quantities of radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere and
caused an open-air fire. Thousand got cancer, mutations, Chernobyl heart,
and have died. After spending billions, it is still a disaster zone. To
honor the victims (and continue informing ourselves & others about nuclear
risks), we will screen the film 'Atomic States of America' and have a
discussion of current energy policy in Ontario. This excellent documentary
covers all aspects of the nuclear scene: economic, political, safety,
accidents, weapons, waste.
