Take the Tooker / Bike Lanes on Bloor
Congratulations everyone! At last, we now have permanent, separated bike lanes on Bloor! The vote on Council (with amendments) passed 36-6.
It was Hamish Wilson's idea in 2005 to push for a legacy project in Tooker Gomberg's honor. Over beers, a group of us agreed to call for Bike Lanes on Bloor/Danforth. We called the campaign Take the Tooker. Several groups carried on the campaign after us, including Bells on Bloor, and then Cycle Toronto. Special kudos to Albert Koehl who lead the campaign for a decade.
But this is just the start. We need to go east and west, from Mississauga to Scarborough. And so on... But for now, ride on!!!

Six Reasons Not to Give Up on the Future, and One Thing to Work On
Plant-based diets on the rise; costs of wind and solar power plummeting; death spiral of coal; electric cars about to lift off; plummeting prices of lithium-ion batteries; improvements in energy efficiency and standards. But the biggest threat that we now need to focus attn. on is annual tree losses doubled since 2000.

Resisting a climate of misogyny
Andrea Harden-Donahue: I believe we are in a critical moment of history with forces pulling towards hate and supporting existing structures that benefit few, contrasted with those organizing towards a more equitable, sustainable way of being. For my part, I won’t let a handful of sexist bullies stop me from speaking out against extreme energy and for the type of economy and community I hope my children will enjoy.

INAC Occupation
Some amazing indigenous activists have been occupying space in front of the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) since July 11th to protest the epidemic of youth suicides in First Nations communities. They are looking for supplies to assist them as the weather gets colder - they aren't going anywhere until the federal government takes meaningful action.

TransCanada and Keystone XL : The Money Pipeline - The Fifth Estate
It's a story of dark money, dirty politics and powerful people. When Donald Trump gave TransCanada the nod to build a pipeline that would carry Canadian crude oil to the gulf of Mexico, it seemed like liquid gold for the Alberta-based company. But a group of angry farmers and activists in mid-western American states are trying everything they can to stop the 'ugly Canadians' from digging a pipeline and running oil through their beloved farmlands. But is anyone listening? Bob McKeown investigates TransCanada’s influential allies in Washington and the deal to build Keystone XL.

Jane
Throughout November
Bloor Hot Docs, 506 Bloor (near Bathurst)
Live with Jane Goodall while she conducts her ground breaking, enthralling work with chimpanzees, which she revealed to be so like humans. Fifty years ago, a National Geographic filmmaker was sent to join her in the Tanzanian jungle, where he captured over 140 hours of 16mm footage that was never used. Today, Academy Award–nominated director Brett Morgen, whose skills of documentary portraiture range from musician Kurt Cobain (Cobain: Montage of Heck) to producer Robert Evans, takes the footage and sets it to a dreamy orchestral score by Philip Glass in this gorgeous, and ultimately very moving, time capsule. 2017
