Help curb contamination in Toronto’s Blue Bin recycling program
The City of Toronto continues to see a significant amount of garbage and other non-recyclable materials in the Blue Bin recycling program. When residents put a Blue Bin out for collection that contains too many non-recyclable items, the materials cannot be sorted and can ruin perfectly good recycling that must be sent to landfill.
Tips to help you recycle:
• Ask the Waste Wizard online at toronto.ca/wastewizard
• Refer to your Recycling Calendar & Guide to learn what belongs in your Blue Bin, your Green Bin or garbage, or call 311.
• Empty and rinse food containers before tossing them in your Blue Bin and put any food scraps in your Green Bin.
• Donate items in good condition, such as used clothes, shoes, blankets, and curtains, to not-for-profit agencies (visit toronto.ca/reuseit)
• Avoid putting black plastic of any kind in your Blue Bin, such as food containers, packaging, coffee lids or plastic garbage bags. These belong in your garbage bin.

We have another chance to stop the White Elephant in the room - the $3.35 billion one-stop Scarborough Subway Extension
Toronto council is set to vote on whether to conduct a value-for-money analysis of the one-stop subway on Tuesday, December 5th. While we need to spend large sums on transit in Scarborough, it has to be done for broad benefit. There's never been a good comparison between the value of the LRTs and the value of the subway extension, and many think the LRTS are by far better for all of us. There is a chance that the City Auditor might do this comparison; public pressure is needed as sense is avoided.

Shelter Now: Fill City Council For Vote on Adding 1000 Shelter Beds

Toronto’s homeless shelter system has been dangerously overfull for a very long time, with dire consequences. 70 homeless people died in the first 9 months of this year, many not even reaching the age of 50. The City has thus far refused to add enough shelter capacity and chosen to cram people into warming centres and volunteer-run out of the cold facilities, but even those are overburdened. Now, following a long fight, the council committee responsible for shelters recently voted unanimously to recommend to City Council that it open 1000 new shelter beds. It also voted 4-1 to call on Mayor Tory to declare a state of emergency and open up the armouries to shelter people this Winter. Both measures are urgently needed and will save lives. City council will vote on both of these recommendations on December 5 and we need to be there. It is by rallying together that we can win what we need. Join us.
