"It’s beyond its design life, it’s served its purpose and now it’s a dangerous, large station in the middle of a large urban population.” she said. “Accidents happen. And when nuclear accidents happen, they’re catastrophic. Why would we risk a catastrophic accident in the middle of a huge urban population when we have lower cost, cleaner alternatives available?”

☢ Cut the power on surplus nuclear generation <https://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=0dcb1f0bf1&e=45743fde61>  By closing Pickering in 2018, we can eliminate our surplus nuclear generation, and we will no longer need to pay the Americans to take it away. In the future, when we need new sources of electricity, we can import low-cost water power from Quebec.

☢ Workers pulled from Ontario nuclear plants <https://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=7228e41236&e=45743fde61>  due to ‘concerning trend of safety incidents’ Trades workers and supervisors tasked with refurbishing the Darlington and Pickering nuclear facilities were told to leave their jobs last week due to a “concerning trend of safety incidents.”

☢ Massive nuclear waste dump could be coming to Chalk River, Ontario <https://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=9ac9530259&e=45743fde61>  Radioactive wastes would be exposed to wind, snow and rain during a 50-year operational period, then covered and abandoned. The mound cover will deteriorate, water will again saturate the mound, and radioactive leachate (along with mercury, lead, PCBs, dioxins, etc.) will migrate into the Ottawa River.

☢ Elliot Lake and Blind River area ruled out as suitable site for nuclear waste bunker <https://cleanairalliance.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9e0d2b5aacdacc8f6d679bba2&id=8861b81c9e&e=45743fde61>  Five communities remain in the running for Canada's high level nuke waste burial site: Ignace 250 km NW of Thunder Bay; Manitouwadge, 395 km east of Thunder Bay; and Hornepayne, 480 km east of Thunder Bay; and South Bruce and Huron-Kinloss in southern ON.
