The World

☢ Greenpeace finds radiation levels remain dangerously high around Fukushima and forcing the relocation of evacuees back into contamination violates human rights Greenpeace has released a new report and 2 short videos on Fukushima seven years on. Heartbreaking.

☢ Animals in Chernobyl and Fukushima are not doing well Mousseau and his fellow researchers found cataracts in birds and rodents. Male birds had a high rate of sterility, upwards of 40%. And the brains of birds were smaller. Birds and rodents had a high frequency of tumors. All of these are known outcomes from radiation exposure. There were also just fewer animals in general. “There is no doubt that the levels of radiation in Chernobyl and Fukushima generate genetic damage.”

☢ Fleeing from Fukushima: a nuclear evacuation reality check 160,000 were evacuated from the 30 km zone around the triple-reactor meltdown. Most are still living away from their homes in makeshift shelters such as shipping containers or prefabricated houses.

☢ Fukushima evacuees face 'forced' return as subsidies withdrawn Thousands who fled 2011 disaster must choose between financial hardship or return to homes they believe are unsafe.

☢ Japanese government accepts United Nations Fukushima recommendations - current policies now must change to stop violation of evacuee human rights The UN is calling on the Japanese gov’t to act immediately to change their policies in the interests of radiation protection of Fukushima citizens, particularly women and children.

☢ Radioactive debris piling up at Fukushima interim facility Black bags filled with radioactive debris collected during decontamination work have been brought to the facility since October, when operations started. The interim facility is expected to cover 1,600 hectares of land, and host the radioactive waste until a final disposal site is found.

☢ Fukushima 7th Anniversary: Voices from Japan Child thyroid cancer rates soar in Fukushima, and more. 60 min. podcast.

☢ Amid Calls for a U.S. Uranium Mining Renewal, Recalling Its Toxic Past Impacts include environmental contamination, toxic spills, abandoned mines, under-addressed cancer and disease clusters and illnesses that citizens link to uranium exposure despite federal denials.

☢ Seaweed shuts nuclear reactor again Roving jellyfish and seaweed have long been unwanted guests at Scotland’s last two nuclear power stations. Now the marine algae have hit again, forcing one of the plants to partially power down.

☢ Protesting nuclear power in India can mean death or imprisonment Criminal to destroy people's livelihoods when renewable energy could meet all our electricity needs.

☢ Police battle hundreds of protesters over nuclear waste storage plans French police used tear gas during clashes with anti-nuclear protesters at a waste site in northeastern France.Ontario

☢ Powering smart action on climate in Ontario The Gov't of ON’s goal of reducing GHG emissions by 80% by 2050 is an ambitious but appropriate target. However, it also means that we cannot afford to squander resources on high-cost actions, such as rebuilding 30-40-year-old nuclear reactors instead of investing in energy efficiency and securing lower cost renewable energy, particularly low-cost water power from Quebec.Renewables and Conservation

☼ Ontario’s utility OPG makes room for solar at demolished coal power plant The partnership between OPG and the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation is set to deliver 44 MW of solar energy when the plant is finished in 2019. Good-bye coal, hello solar!

☼ Over 100 Global Cities Get Majority of Electricity from Renewables such as hydro, geothermal, solar and wind, including Vancouver. This has more than doubled since 2015. Here’s more.Take Action!
