Going Renewable Means Phasing Out Our Aging Nuclear Reactors

Blog post by me. Did you know ON has 18 working nuclear reactors, and they're all old? We could go renewable, OR we could rebuild 12 of these dinosaurs at very high public expense and extend the life of 6 way beyond their design life. Guess what route the gov't has chosen.

Cycling and the 2018 Budget

By Share the Road Cycling Coalition. In 2017–18, Ontario’s auctions of GHG emission allowances generated $2.4 billion in proceeds. To date, over $90 million of these proceeds have been invested in supporting commuter cycling through the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling Program. Looking forward, we can expect to see up to $140 million more invested in cycling in the coming years, including a portion of the estimated $2 billion in auction proceeds expected for 2018–19.

Judy Rebick: Toronto Book Launch - Heroes in My Head

Tues. April 3, 7 – 9 p.m.

Lula Lounge, 1585 Dundas West

In this riveting memoir, Judy Rebick, one of Canada’s best-known feminists, lays bare the public and private battles that have shaped her life. She documents two major decades in her life: the 1980s, when she became a high-profile spokesperson for the pro-choice movement during the fight to legalize abortion; and the 1990s, when she took on her biggest challenge as a public figure by becoming president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. Here, for the first time, she also reveals the very private battles she waged during these important decades. The result is a fascinating, heartbreaking, but ultimately empowering story.

Climate Change Despair Got You Down? Get Over It. We Can Win This

Robert Hunter Memorial Lecture with Ontario's 24th Premier Dalton McGuinty

Thursday, April 5, 5:10 pm

Koffler House, 569 Spadina Crescent, U of T

Dalton McGuinty was named “Canada’s greenest Premier ever” by Stewart Elgie, founder and managing lawyer of the Sierra Legal Defence Fund, now Canada’s largest public interest environmental law organization. During his tenure as Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty cut smog days in half by reducing coal-fired power by 90%.  He left the provincial government on track to shut down the last coal plants in southern Ontario by the end of 2013.  He also brought in the toughest drinking water standards in the world, built 1000 wind turbines, created Ontario’s Greenbelt and expanded it to nearly two million acres of protected land. He left Ontario a green leader on the world stage — he helped create over 30,000 new, clean-energy jobs through the world-leading FIT program and left Ontario leading Canada in solar capacity.
