Ontario Prepares New Climate Plan Based on Australia’s Failed Emissions Fund

Although the announcement isn’t due for another week or more, the Ontario government is coming under fire for considering a new climate plan based on a failed policy experiment in Australia, even as it continues to take heat for gutting a past program that was working just fine. “If they follow Australia’s model, there is no chance in hell that emissions will go down.”

Seabirds Face ‘Agonizing Death’ as Newfoundland Offshore Oil Spill Becomes Impossible to Clean

Newfoundland and Labrador has no hope of cleaning up from its worst-ever oil spill, after stormy waters off the east coast broke up at least two ocean oil sheens to the point that 250,000 litres of toxic material can no longer be recovered. “My guess is it means there’s a horrendous number of dead birds out there. They’ll die an agonizing death, even if they get exposed to a tiny amount of oil.”

White Supremacy and the Alt-Right: Community Response

With recent attacks on targeted minorities, including the murder several weeks ago of 11 Jews in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, we must look more closely at both historical white supremacy and its manifestations today. Canada is not immune: Reported hate crimes in Canada rose 47% between 2015 and 2016. White nationalist Toronto mayoral candidate Faith Goldy received over 25,000 votes. Why is white supremacy reappearing in Canada? Is it possible for riots like Charlottesville's to appear in the streets of downtown Toronto? Panelists will discuss hate crimes and the alt-right on a campus, municipal, and national level, as well as community responses from the Jewish, Muslim, and Black communities, among others.

The IPCC 1.5 degree report: key findings - Webinar

Kirsten Zickfeld will present key findings from the recently published IPCC Special Report on the Global Warming of 1.5 degrees. She will describe the current warming relative to 1.5 degrees, the benefits of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees compared to 2 degrees and warming resulting from a business-as-usual trajectory, and the actions needed to achieve the 1.5 degree limit. Kirsten Zickfeld, the only lead author from Canada of the IPCC's recent Special Report on 1.5°C of warming, is a specialist in climate feedbacks and tipping points that could lead to runaway global warming.

Dr. Tarek Loubani is an Associate Professor at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University, and an emergency room physician at the London Health Sciences Centre and the Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza. He is well-known for his humanitarian work as a field medic in Gaza, where he was shot in the leg by the Israeli military in May 2018 while providing health care for injured Palestinians during the Great March of Return.
