Climate Change and Migration
Climate change is driving migration around the world. But the same leaders denying climate change are the ones drumming up fear and hatred against migrants. By preying on racism, or the real danger that policies like carbon taxes hurt the poor, migration and climate action are both issues that can be used to pit working class people against each other. Sign up to learn more about climate change and migration, and how we can fight together instead of letting the right divide us.

Fight for your right to repair
Manufacturers are making it harder for us to repair products we buy. Instead, we’re being forced to replace our appliances and devices more frequently, leading to an increase in costs and a massive global e-waste problem. The government has the power to mandate the right to repair and give us the right to ask for a repair manual, tools and spare parts from a manufacturer. It’s a highly popular idea that spans the political spectrum, and if enough of us speak out we could see this become a reality in Canada. Will you sign this petition calling on Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains to give us the right to repair?

Canada: Stop Arming the War in Yemen
Tuesday, March 19, noon - 1 pm
Outside Chrystia Freeland’s office, 344 Bloor St. West
Join Amnesty International for a petition delivery and lunch time rally at Minister Freeland's office, asking the Canadian government to immediately cancel arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Canada currently has a $15 billion multi-year arms deal with Saudi Arabia, selling armoured vehicles that risk being used in the conflict in Yemen to commit serious human rights violations. March 2019 marks 4 years since that conflict began. Over 16,000 people have signed Amnesty Canada's petition urging the government to cancel this arms deal. We will take those names and a strong message to Minister Freeland's constituency office to urge the Canadian government to cancel the arms deal immediately. You can sign the petition here: https://takeaction.amnesty.ca/page/35358/action/1?locale=en-US

The New Left in Toronto
Tues. March 19, 7 p.m.
Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil St.
Peter Graham has written a fascinating new book (with Ian McKay) on the history of this new movement on the left in Toronto that flourished from the 1950s to the 1980s. The New Left was a new form of politics that drew in thousands of young radicals and made a huge impact on the city's political and cultural life. This new breed of radicals placed the ideals of self-determination and community at the core of their politics. As with all leftists, they sought to transcend capitalism, but also emphasized solidarity with national liberation movements challenging imperialism around the world. They took up organizational forms that anticipated in their direct, grassroots, community-based democracy, the liberated world of the future. Come and join the discussion of a movement that shaped a generation.

Building Consensus: Making Group Decisions Together
Wed. March 20, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
The Greenpeace Mobilization Hub, 33 Cecil St
Attending, facilitating, and participating in meetings are a major part of movement building. When we make decisions together in meetings, developing a transparent, structured process that focuses on building a shared understanding and making sure everyone involved has a say can mean that whatever we come up with is more creative and more supported by the whole group. Join us as we spend time exploring effective group decision-making in social movement organizations. Together we'll discuss and share strategies for fostering good communication, embracing dissent in our groups, solving disagreements with creative thinking, and addressing informal group hierarchy through intentional, structured group process. This workshop will be especially relevant for groups who are used to using "informal" consensus (aka "basically consensus") as an approach to decision-making, and who tend to have meetings with 3-20 people. A Tools for Change workshop.

All Out Against Fascism
Sat. March 23, 1 - 4 p.m.
361 University Ave.
PEGIDA is planning to hold an anti-Muslim, anti-refugee rally at the corner of University Avenue and Armoury Street. We expect various far-right groups to take part, including the Proud Boys, the Northern Guard, the Three Percenter militia, and others. We shut them down last time and we intend to do it again. Toronto Against Fascism will be there to stand against racism and fascism. Please come out and support Muslims, refugees, immigrants, and all others under threat by these organizations. Numbers are important. If there are enough of us, the police won’t let them march. We had them outnumbered 2 or 3 to one last time, and they skulked off home without marching. It’s important that PEGIDA and their fellow travellers are opposed vociferously.
