‘We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For’: Youth from 125 Countries Join May 24 School Strike
Last Friday one million kids from 125 countries in 2000 actions cried out for climate sanity: “it is time for all of us to unleash mass resistance—we have shown that collective action does work. We need to escalate the pressure to make sure that change happens, and we must escalate together.”

About 80 countries are on track to announce tougher greenhouse gas reduction targets during UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ climate summit this Sept, the same day that Guterres warned that fossil fuel subsidies are helping “to destroy the world”.

Climate change and biodiversity should be top headline news - David Suzuki
Why aren't these reports dominating front pages, financial sections and newscasts, highlighting the enormous societal and economic implications? David Suzuki writes that in Canada, one company, Postmedia, owns much of our print media (with added online presence). In Alberta, where many people seem to lack basic information about climate disruption, the company owns all major dailies in Calgary and Edmonton, and many smaller community newspapers. In 2013, Postmedia -- mostly owned by a U.S. hedge fund -- entered into an agreement with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers to "bring energy to the forefront of our national conversation." It recently hired Alberta Premier Jason Kenney's former campaign director Nick Koolsbergen to "discuss ways Postmedia could be involved in the government's energy war room" -- a $20 million program to "fight fake news and share the truth about Alberta's resource sector and energy issues."

Premier Ford breaks his promise to “come down heavy on polluters” by scrapping Ontario’s only toxics law
Earlier this week, the Ontario government voted to repeal the province’s Toxics Reduction Act (TRA) in 2021 and halt the implementation of some of its provisions immediately. This action was buried in the bulk of the infamous omnibus Bill 66, also known as Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act, 2018.

Doug Ford’s Reforestation and Conservation Cuts Show He Has Historical Amnesia
Reforestation and conservation cuts will only increase flooding and other environmental problems in an age when these problems are being amplified by climate change. We need to learn from past environmental mistakes if we wish to avoid repeating them.

We all deserve a place to call home, including Ontario’s vulnerable wildlife.
But the Ford government is forcing a choice between building homes and protecting endangered species. Bill 108 would remove protections for Ontario’s 230+ species-at-risk, allowing big developers to bulldoze their habitat to turn a profit. The Green Party is standing up for real housing solutions that won’t cost the Algonquin Wolf or the Monarch Butterfly their homes. Ask your MPP to stand with Mike Schreiner and vote NO on Bill 108!

How to Build More Affordable Housing Now
Wed. June 5, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
St. Lawrence Hall, 157 King St. East
The City of Toronto is consulting the public to help develop a new 10-year housing strategy. HousingTO: 2020-2030 Action Plan should address homelessness and housing affordability today and in the future. Questions that we need to answer include: How to effectively define “affordable” housing in an expensive city like Toronto? How can we expand affordable housing today and not 10 years from now? What does “housing as a human right” look like in Toronto? How can we build more non-profit and co-operative housing? How do we get new affordable housing into every new development? Join us for a presentation, panel discussion and community conversation.

Together for Ontario
Saturday June 8, 10 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Bricker Academic Building, Wilfrid Laurier University, Bricker Ave, Waterloo
In the past year, Ontario has experienced a slew of regressive policies aiming to overturn decades of environmental protections put in place by previous governments of all political stripes. The list is staggering: the cancellation of the climate act and cap-and-trade, the legal challenge to carbon pricing, Bill 66, a gutting of the Endangered Species Act, changes to the Environmental Assessment Act, Growth Plan, and more on the way. Join us as we gather Ontario’s environmental community to launch a coordinated response to this attack on our environment and our province.
