This is Not A Drill: 700+ Arrested as Extinction Rebellion Fights Climate Crisis With Direct Action
Heartfelt thanks to the 700+ citizens around the world that got arrested yesterday to bring attn. to Extinction Rebellion demands for a climate emergency. And to the 20 citizens in Toronto that got arrested blockading the Bloor Viaduct. And to the dozens of citizens today blockading and scaling the Jean Cartier bridge in Montreal. Brilliant interview with Gail Bradbrook of Extinction Rebellion on Democracy Now.

Let’s stop calling this the Sixth Great Extinction. Let’s start calling it what it is: the “first great extermination”
The big polluters’ masterstroke was to blame the climate crisis on you and me. The answer, George Monbiot suggests, lies in "mass dilemma actions" where thousands of people assemble in the centre of the capital city, maintaining a strictly nonviolent discipline, focusing on the government and continuing for days or weeks at a time rather than small-scale, high-risk activism. Extinction Rebellion is aiming to create these non-violent mass dilemma actions.

It’s a No-Brainer — Tax the Billionaires!
A wealth tax wouldn’t just bring in revenue. It would curb the out-of-control political power of the one per cent. Both the Greens and NDP support a one-per-cent tax on wealth above $20 million.

The Work: Unpacking Masculinity and Patriarchy
Tues. Oct. 15, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre, 1499 Queen St. West
Western masculinity is in a state of crisis. Even as feminist-inspired movements for social change are making strides in challenging patriarchal authority, conservative and alt-right forces are consolidating their control over how masculinity is debated and understood. What would a feminist masculinity look like, in 2019? How can we, as a culture of feminist men, women and non-binary people, work to cultivate it? 2017 documentary film, "The Work," offers a provocative and fascinating snapshot into an intensive struggle for personal and social change. The film follows an intensive weekend of group work at Folsom State Prison, in which incarcerated and non-incarcerated men delve into a world of complex and often explosive emotions together. Join this screening and discussion of the film.

The Growing Threat of PFAS – the Forever Chemicals
Wed. Oct. 16, 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m
Webinar
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of chemicals widely used for over fifty years due to their ability to resist grease, water, and oil. They are highly persistent in the environment, have known health impacts and are now widely present in the blood of all Canadians tested. PFAS is used in household products such as carpets, furniture, waterproof clothing and food packaging as well as firefighting foam to deal with fuel-based fires. Because they are highly mobile and persistent in water, PFAS are recognized as a widespread drinking water contaminant. According to experts, in the Great Lakes Basin, "the highest levels of PFAS are generally found in areas of Lake Ontario, the western end of Lake Erie and the Detroit River corridor" with Toronto having the highest concentrations of certain PFAS in air. But Canadians have very low awareness of PFAS use and contaminated sites and little understanding of how the Canadian government is responding. The Canadian Environmental Law Association, Toxics Free Great Lakes Network, and Healthy Great Lakes Program is sponsoring this webinar to present an overview of PFAS use, the growing threat to the Great Lakes-St Lawrence River Ecosystem and a discussion of how communities can take action.

Chew On This
Thur. Oct. 17
Oct. 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Chew on This! marks this important day each year with our nation-wide event, drawing attention to poverty in Canada and calling for action through a national plan to end poverty. Over 5 million people in Canada live in poverty. 1 in 8 families struggle to put food on the table. Chew on This! is a non-partisan cross-country campaign coordinated by Dignity for All, but made possible through local organizers from coast to coast to coast. Our goal is to raise awareness about poverty in Canada by engaging with people on the street, in schools, at places of worship, and on Parliament Hill and adding their voices to our call for federal leadership in ending poverty in Canada.

Toxic Tour of Chemical Valley
Sat. Oct. 19, 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Bus leaves for Christie Pits and returns in the evening
The Toxic Tour is an opportunity to see and experience first-hand the pollution that Aamjiwnaang First Nation community members experience every day. Aamjiwnaang First Nation is located in the middle of Sarnia’s Chemical Valley, the most polluted place in North America, according to National Geographic. The reserve is encircled by over 73 high-emitting facilities such as petrochemical refineries and various factories. The toxic operations and regular chemical releases are poisoning people in the community which faces high rates of asthma, cancer, miscarriages, stillbirths, and endocrine disruptions. The fact that an Indigenous community is being sacrificed for corporate profit and nothing is being done to protect community members is a clear sign of Environmental Racism. We can do our part by learning about this situation and supporting the grassroots groups raising awareness and trying to stop further contamination of the community’s people and territory. By Rising Tide Toronto
Register for the actual tour in Aamjiwnaang by filling in the form found at http://www.aamjiwnaangsolidarity.org/
