Alberta the World’s Biggest Per Capita Carbon Polluter

Alberta has the highest per capita emissions in the world, three times higher than Saudi Arabia, currently the worst colossal fossil among the world’s nations. “You might think that Alberta is such a threat because of the massive expansions in the oil and gas industry, particularly the oilsands. But it turns out that governments and industry have built an economy so dirty that it makes each Albertan almost twice as polluting as Saudis, even if you ignore emissions from Alberta’s oil and gas sector entirely.”

Mayor Tory: Declare Homelessness an Emergency

This past month there have been eight reported homeless deaths in the City of Toronto. The City has failed to shelter the most vulnerable. All seven Respite Centres are full, the two 24-hour women’s drop-ins and the Out of the Cold program are over capacity on many nights. The Assessment and Referral Centre on Peter Street is unable to operate as a referral centre as there are insufficient beds in the system. In order to prevent more deaths and suffering, we request that you enact the City of Toronto Emergency Plan immediately.

We have less than 11 years, according to the IPCC report, to completely transform our economy and society to avert further climate catastrophe. Yet Canadian governments refuse to take meaningful systemic action, and instead opt to spend billions in public money to fund more pipelines while doling out billions more for dead-end corporate welfare subsidies. Meanwhile, those at the frontlines of the climate crisis, namely Indigenous, racialized, and poor communities, are being neglected by decision-makers.

Climate Justice Toronto (CJTO) is organizing to unite young people from all movement backgrounds in the GTA to send a message to our governments and the broader public: the only people who will be making decisions about our future is us, the people affected, and especially the most marginalized among us. Through solidarity and alliance-building, direct action, creative storytelling, and electoral organizing, we will forge a just transition towards a decarbonized economy, and a Green New Deal for all.
