At Davos we will tell world leaders to abandon the fossil fuel economy

Greta and friends call upon the world’s leaders to stop investing in the fossil fuel economy that is at the very heart of this planetary crisis. Instead, they should invest their money in existing sustainable technologies, research and in restoring nature. Short-term profit should not trump long-term stability of life.

Terrorism police list Extinction Rebellion as extremist ideology

“How dare they? Children up and down the country are desperately fighting for a future. Teachers, grandparents, nurses have been trying their best with loving nonviolence to get politicians and big business to do something about the dire state of our planet. And this is how the establishment responds. IIn a world of misinformation, where lies travel faster than the truth, we can’t help but wonder was this a deliberate attempt to silence a legitimate cause. Wouldn’t it be nice if they focused on the real extremists, the fossil fuel companies and those that do their bidding?”

If the world ran on sun, it wouldn’t fight over oil - by Bill McKibben

If it happens, this war, like the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, will cost untold lives, most of them civilian. It will also, like those conflicts, cost trillions of dollars. Imagine if we had spent those trillions of dollars not on cruise missiles and up-armoured Humvees, but on solar farms and offshore wind turbines. Imagine if we’d stuck insulation in the walls of every building in the US, and built a robust network of electric vehicle chargers. That’s not a fanciful vision – it’s exactly what legislation such as the Green New Deal.

Toronto Homeless Memorial

Tues. Jan. 14, noon - 1 p.m.

Church of the Holy Trinity, 19 Trinity Square (behind Eaton's Centre)

The Toronto Homeless Memorial remembers those who have died as a result of homelessness in Toronto. Join community members to mark the 1000th death added to the Homeless Memorial. There is a memorial service held on the second Tuesday of each month at noon outside the south door of Holy Trinity. Each month we sadly add names to the memorial and remember those who have died. We also speak to the injustice that causes homelessness. Each service is followed by a meal inside the church provided by Holy Trinity members. You are welcome to join in remembrance, sadness and anger. This week the ceremony will be followed by a silent march to City Hall to present Mayor Tory with the Shelter Housing Justice Network’s petition, signed by almost 25,000 people, demanding he declare an emergency on homelessness.

The Stairs

Tues. Jan. 14, 6. p.m.

Paradise Theatre, 1006 Bloor St West (near Dovercourt)

Hugh Gibson’s award-winning The Stairs intimately introduces us to three Regent Park public health workers committed to helping others with harm reduction while wrestling with their own complicated recoveries. Shot over five years with unobtrusive dedication and much like the path to recovery, the film is punctuated with moments of great hope and despair. An important film for Toronto and our times, and one that’s guaranteed to stay with you.

When the Storm Fades

VIP Lounge Cineplex - Yonge & Dundas

Several years after the strongest storm in history, the Pablos have rebuilt their seaside home in Tacloban, one of the Philippines’ poorest neighbourhoods. Their slow recovery is shaken up by two awkward Canadian volunteers planting trees in the community. This white couple is learning the difference between helping and actually being helpful.  Part comedic fiction, part documentary re-enactment - the result is a satirical examination of the white saviour complex and a quiet meditation on grief in the era of climate change. Award-winning film.
