Mon. February 10, 7 - 8:30 pm

Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre, Dance Studio, 627 Queens Quay West

Every winter, the world of prospecting and mining gathers in Toronto, as our fair city plays host to the worlds largest mining conference, PDAC (Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada). The conference attracts executives and engineers from mining companies the world over. Mining Injustice Solidarity Network will be partnering with Extinction Rebellion Toronto for an evening that will allow us all to ensure this year's PDAC is no different. Veteran organisers with MISN will give a 30 minute teach in covering what PDAC is and how it's structured, why it's an important place to disrupt, and what past interventions have looked like. This will be followed by a ZAP proposal session where we will brainstorm and kickstart the myriad actions that will make this PDAC one to remember!

Waste Not Book Launch

Mon. Feb. 10, 7 - 9 p.m.

Jackman Humanities Institute, 170 St. George St, Room 100, U of T

Professor Tanhum Yoreh traces the development of bal tashḥit, the Jewish prohibition against wastefulness and destruction, from its biblical origins to the contemporary environmental movement. Waste Not provides a comprehensive intellectual history of this concept, charting its evolution from the Bible through classical rabbinic literature, commentaries, codes of law, responsa, and the works of modern environmentalists. This book supports conversations about faith, consumption and waste, and provides a foundation for understanding the prohibition as an environmental ethic for today and tomorrow.

Ontario Teachers’ Pension Protest

Hosted by Extinction Rebellion Toronto and Toronto 350.org

Tues. Feb. 11, noon - 1 p.m.

5650 Yonge St

We'll be outside the Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan offices offering passersby the choice of free coal (provided by the pension plan) and free apples (provided by actual retired teachers). The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario has passed a motion directing their representative on the Ontario Teachers' Federation to divest from fossil fuels, but the Pension Fund isn't listening. The OSSTF is presenting a similar motion at their annual meeting in March, but the Pension Plan will probably ignore them too. Youth from Bristol have begged the plan not to expand their local airport, but the Pension fund managers are ignoring them.

No More Silence

15th Annual Strawberry Ceremony

Fri. Feb. 14, 12:30 pm

Toronto Police Headquarters, 40 College St (close to Bay)

On February 14th we come together in solidarity with the women who started this vigil over 25 years ago in Vancouver's DTES, and with the marches and rallies that will be taking place across this land. We stand in defense of our lives and to demonstrate against the complicity of the state in the ongoing genocide of Indigenous women and the impunity of state institutions and actors (police, RCMP, coroners' offices, the courts, and an indifferent federal government) that prevents justice for all Indigenous peoples.

Family Day: The Elephant Queen

Mon. Feb. 17, 12:45 p.m.

Bloor Hot Docs, Bloor and Bathurst

Travel across the African savannah and into the heart of an elephant family, led by Athena, a mother who will do everything in her power to protect her herd when they are forced to leave their waterhole. For four years, filmmakers Mark Deeble and Victoria Stone lived up close and personal with these majestic creatures, capturing their intimate moments and discovering their striking similarity to humans. Narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor, The Elephant Queen is a compelling story of unbreakable familial bonds and an unwillingness to give up—a touching tribute to a vanishing species. Free for kids under 16.
