Turning Down the Heat: Can We Mine Our Way Out of the Climate Crisis?
Tues. November 17, 2 - 4 pm EST
Please join us for a virtual round table looking at where are we at, one year after the conference: a report-back and conversation with MiningWatch staff and special guests from around the world. Hear:
- updates from extractive regions (Canada, Chile, southern Africa);
- reflections on how pressure is being/can be built to (a) reduce energy consumption and demand for minerals and metals, and (b) impose stricter conditions on extraction (FPIC/right to say 'no', no-go zones, safeguards etc.); and
- perspectives on how efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and build a Green Recovery/Green New Deal are working towards global equity – or not.

Sound the Alarm - Wake up to the Climate Crisis
Tues. Nov. 17
Politicians are not meeting the crises we’re facing at the scale we need. It’s up to us to shake them out of their complacency. That’s why on November 17th, we’re sending a clear message that business-as-usual isn’t working. In this moment of a climate emergency, global pandemic, and economic recession, we need big, bold ideas. Together, we’ll make sure we’re heard on the same day as the Trans Mountain (TMX) crown corporation’s Annual General Meeting. While oil executives discuss how they’re spending our money to build the climate-wrecking TMX pipeline, we’ll take to the streets across the country to let them know their time is up. We need action now to defund Trans Mountain and invest in a Green New Deal that works for people and the planet.
https://350.org/canada/tmxalarm/
In Toronto, join Toronto350 as we start the day of the Trans Mountain Crown Corporation's AGM with speech and song, music and art.
Tues. November 17, 7 a.m.
1240 Bay Street
Call for de-funding TMX & investing in a Green New Deal!

The Role Of The Canadian Financial Sector in Expanding Carbon Intensive Projects
Tuesday, November 17, noon - 1 p.m. EST
We are witnessing major shifts in lending and investment policies across the globe by banks, pension funds and other major sources of capital to low or zero carbon emission products and infrastructure. Are Canadian financial institutions moving quickly enough to this new reality? Are Canadian savings products aligned to Canadian commitments to a green economy? Are banks’ lending portfolios aligned to the commitments being made by the Canadian government internationally at COP21 and domestically in the most recent Throne Speech?

Pension Fund Capitalism and the Covid-19 Pandemic in Canada: A Socialist Perspective
Wed. Nov. 18, 7 p.m. ET
The devastating social and economic impacts of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in Canada have been felt widely. But the key statistic of the death rate has been heavily concentrated: over 80% of the deaths from Covid-19 have taken place in Long-Term Care of various types. How did Long-Term Care – a vital component of the health care system – become so privatized, within a system that is so widely and proudly viewed as public? This talk will examine the class politics of pension fund investment into for-profit Long-Term Care as a disturbing example of the commodification of social reproduction.
