RIP Alan Wayne Scott

One of Toronto's great cycling activists, Alan Wayne "Scunny" Scott was involved in Toronto's cycling courier community since the early 80's, winning a Fuel for Food Deductibility for bike couriers. He advocated on behalf of fellow courier Darcy Allan Sheppard who was run down (killed) by politician/lawyer Michael Bryant because Wayne believed the case was never properly investigated or charged. Wayne was also a co-founder of Take the Tooker.

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) was announced in Johannesburg in 2002, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development. This global governance initiative emerged thanks to a huge push from non-state actors, especially the transnational civil society coalition. Although the initiative was designed to involve core participation from civil society organizations and corporations, key decision-making processes within the EITI point to a state-centred co-optation of the movement. This seminar examines whether, and to what extent, the shift from a non-state actor movement to a state-centred initiative ultimately contributed to the silencing of environmental concerns from the EITI’s earlier framework.
