Bankrupt Texas Oil Companies Abandon Toxic Wells, Cash Out CEOs
Last year alone, 31 US oil/gas companies - worth more than US$50 billion - filed for bankruptcy in Texas, bringing with them a wave of well abandonments. Currently, there are approximately 2.1 million unplugged abandoned wells across the country. And it's not just oil and gas companies passing on their responsibilities - recent bankruptcy filing by the American coal giant Blackjewel is a harbinger of trouble ahead for the plummeting coal industry with nearly 8,000 acres of strip-mined mountains in need of reclamation.

Canada is drowning in plastic waste — and recycling won't save us
Canadians dispose of about 3.3 million tonnes of plastic each year, almost half of which is packaging. Well over three-quarters currently goes to landfills, a small proportion is incinerated and about one per cent ends up directly in the environment. Only nine per cent — or 305,000 tonnes — is recycled. "There are people alive (who) have memories of before there was disposable packaging. They ate things. They were OK.”

'Truth to power:' RIP renowned scientist David Schindler
One of Canada's great environmental scientist has passed. In the '70's, he pioneered studies on acid rain which lead to the Acid Rain Treaty signed by the US and Canada in '91. He then turned his attn. to studying the effects of industrial pollution from the tarsands and pulp mills on the Peace-Athabasca River Basin which lead to increased legislation and monitoring.

Indigenous Truth Before Reconciliation
Wed. March 17, 1 p.m. EST
How many of us really know Indigenous history? The inconsistent signing of treaties. The harmful details of the 1876 Indian Act, still in effect. Pierre Trudeau’s “assimilation” White Paper. Harper’s “take-it-or-leave-it” negotiations. Justin Trudeau’s “reconciliation” (pipeline) agenda. With Bill C-15 to implement the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the House of Commons, let's examine that history. And a future threatened by the climate crisis.

Just Transition Act Town Hall
Thur. March 18, 6 p.m. EST
350.org is holding a grassroots town hall to get some answers from our federal leaders about Canada’s promised Just Transition Act. Over 12,000 people across Canada have called on Trudeau to deliver a Just Transition Act with no response. That’s why we’ve invited Trudeau’s Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson to answer the public’s questions about Canada’s just transition. Wilkinson still hasn’t answered the invitation but Green Party Parliamentary Leader Elizabeth May and NDP Environment Critic Laurel Collins have confirmed they will be there.

Rally to Reclaim Nestlé’s Troubled Waters
Thur. March 18, 7 p.m. EST
Nestlé, the world’s largest corporate water bottler, has announced it is planning to sell its North American bulk bottled water business, which operates the brands Arrowhead, Poland Spring, Zephyrhills, Pure Life, Ice Mountain and others, to private equity firm One Rock Capital. This sale, for an estimated $4 billion, will be a massive private transfer of ‘water wealth,’ an especially ominous development in light of Wall Street’s accelerating interest in ‘water futures’ trading. Wellington Water Watchers is part of the coalition of national advocacy groups and communities impacted by Nestlé’s water extraction and bottling demanding that Nestlé Waters’ sites be returned to public ownership before any sale.
