Climate Action Network Canada Reacts to Supreme Court Ruling on Carbon Pricing
Thursday's ruling from the Supreme Court of Canada on the Government of Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act (GGPPA) confirms the constitutionality of the federal carbon pricing backstop. With this ruling, there is no longer any credible reason for provinces who launched the legal challenge against carbon pricing – Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan – to delay the creation and implementation of strong provincial climate plans that drive down emissions in line with Canada’s 2030 and 2050 targets.

Stunning revelations about Pickering Nuclear Station's safety
The recent revelations in the Globe and Mail about the deeply flawed analysis of the state of a major component in the Pickering Nuclear Plant is disturbing and alarming. Continuing to operate the third oldest nuclear plant in North America, surrounded by millions of people, while banking on a system of aging pressure tubes to not fail is simply rolling the dice with the lives of people throughout the GTA. This plant has a long history of safety problems and is now operating well past its design life. Given its location, this is scandalous. We call on the Ontario Gov't to order OPG to begin shutting down Pickering Nuclear ASAP and stop taking chances with our lives. We have many better options to keep our lights on -- relying on an aging first generation nuclear plant surrounded by millions of people should not be one of them.

The Enduring Nuclear Threat: A Deeper Look
Tues. March 30, 8 – 9:30 pm EST
The recent entry into force of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons brought a welcome positive moment to a bleak disarmament landscape. But none of the nuclear-armed states have joined the Treaty, and all are expanding or modernizing their nuclear arsenals. This webinar, hosted by UFPJ, will provide an update on nuclear weapons policies and programs and an overview of relevant developments in international law. It also will suggest the need to rethink familiar approaches to disarmament, and to shift the focus of disarmament advocacy from recognizing the effects of nuclear weapons to analyzing the causes of nuclear arms racing and of the risks of war among nuclear-armed countries – the same root causes driving many of our other most pressing crises.

Climate Crisis Federal Budget?
Wed. March 31, 1 p.m. EST
The climate crisis is here, from the melting Arctic to flooding Australia. The pandemic has killed more than 20,000 Canadians. Businesses have collapsed. A million fewer workers are employed. Inequality has dangerously increased. Social programs are inadequate. How will the Liberals respond? Will they continue with their ineffectual, incremental change? Or will they admit that we are faced with a climate and societal emergency? Will they Build Back Fossil Free, creating stable, well-paid, green jobs? Will they truly support precarious workers, communities of colour, seniors, and women? Will they tax the filthy rich and their COVID-19 profits? Join us to find out what informed, outspoken, Green Party MP Elizabeth May and experienced CCPA economist Marc Lee want to hear on Budget Day, and what they expect.
