2021 Right Livelihood Laureates
The Right Livelihood Award recognizes the actions of brave visionaries. It has been called the "alternative Nobel prize". One of the 4 Laureates this year is Canada's amazing Freya Huson of Wet'suwet'en Nation, a hereditary chief, longtime advocate for Indigenous sovereignty, and leader in the fight to stop Coastal GasLink and a coordinator of the Unist'ot'en camp.
Another of the 4 is Vladimir Slivyak, a russian anti-nuclear activist.

Wet'suwet'en Strong
Under ‘Anuc niwh’it’en (Wet’suwet’en law) all five clans of the Wet’suwet’en have unanimously opposed all pipeline proposals and have not provided free, prior, and informed consent to Coastal Gaslink/ TransCanada to do work on Wet’suwet’en lands.

Canada’s Irreconciliables
15 years ago, a group of Indigenous land defenders envisioned how direct action, backed by non-Indigenous support, could transform Canada. Now it’s close to happening.

‘Blah, blah, blah’: Greta Thunberg lambasts leaders over climate crisis
>From The Guardian: Carbon emissions are on track to rise by 16% by 2030, rather than fall by half, which is the cut needed to keep global heating under 1.5C. “Build back better. Blah, blah, blah. Green economy. Blah blah blah. Net zero by 2050. Blah, blah, blah,” she said in a speech to the Youth4Climate summit in Milan. “This is all we hear from our so-called leaders. Words that sound great but so far have not led to action. Our hopes and ambitions drown in their empty promises.”

All Party Consent for Ring of Fire Mining Shows Tragic Decline in Ontario Political Cultures
For our political leaders to support creating roads in the James Bay Lowlands that would threaten to wreck our province’s refrigerator, when much of the world faces wildfires and drought, is criminal stupidity. The lands of the Hudson Bay Lowlands - which contain as much water as the entire Great Lakes - are so critical today because they are one of the last large areas of the planet that have not been altered by human industrialized machinations since the end of the Pleistocene.

Does the government have the right to deceive the public? Roundtable discussion
Tues. Oct 5, 3 p.m. ET
What does the murder of activist Mariano Abarca in Chiapas, México say about Canadian government accountability? With support from Mexican and Canadian organizations, the family of environmental defender Mariano Abarca, who was murdered in 2009, is seeking an investigation into the Canadian Embassy in Mexico. They believe that the Embassy’s unconditional lobbying in support of a Canadian mining company put Mariano’s life in greater danger in the lead up to his murder. This roundtable will discuss Canadian practice when it comes to embassies abroad and conflicts over Canadian mining operations, asking whether Mariano’s case is the pattern or an exception. The Return: Life After ISIS is a unique portrait of a group of Western women who pledged their lives to ISIS, but now want to return home to restart their lives. Struggle for Climate Justice: Post Election Tasks & Perspectives
Wed. Oct. 6, 9 p.m. ET
During the federal election in Canada, it was startling how major political parties were able to continue to ignore the climate crisis that is all around us. Party platforms and the debates barely gave lip-service to the climate disaster and the immediate action required to restore the delicate balance with mother earth. Meanwhile, movements across Canada continue to confront resource extraction projects, demand divestment from oil and gas corporations, and organize in defense of the rights of Indigenous peoples. And the divide between the status-quo environmental policies of the government of Canada and the people of Canada is growing. Join Climate Convergence and climate justice organizers across Canada as we discuss building the climate justice movement and how we move forward together to create the better, just, and sustainable world.

Pipelines Around the World
Wed. Oct. 6, 7:30 p.m. ET
The topic theme is the role of petroleum in ongoing tensions and rivalries between the United States, Russia and China. The US, world’s hegemon for thirty years, aims to contain the rise of Russia and China. Petroleum politics are part of the story, e.g. Nord Stream 2 and Xinjiang. Facing a hostile America, China and Russia have formed a strategic partnership, with both countries investing heavily in pipelines. Since 9/11, Western countries have launched military interventions and imposed sanctions on one petroleum country after another, even China and Russia. None has been successful. Why does Canada support these actions? With John Foster, retired petroleum engineer and author of “Oil & World Politics”

Feminist Resistance: Militarism and Climate Change
Wed. Oct. 6, 10 a.m. ET
The recent IPCC report has made the world strikingly aware that the current rate of climate change is a ‘code red for humanity’. Yet, the role of the military as the world’s single greatest emitter in use of fossil fuels is sorely overlooked in traditional environment discussions. How can we raise awareness about this connection and address the role of militarism as a root cause of climate change? What are the connections between climate action, feminism, and peace? As we begin the road to COP26, join WILPF members from Germany, Sweden, Norway, Canada and Zimbabwe as they discuss the situation in their region and share how they are mobilising feminist values to campaign for an end to militarism and towards climate justice, from the grassroots to the international level. Organized by the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF).

New nuclear and what's at stake for wildlife
Thur. Oct. 7, 2 p.m. ET
New nuclear power plants will cause irreparable loss to biodiversity and harm and destroy wild places and the creatures who live there. Wildlife protection helped defeat the proposed new nuclear power plant in Wales. Can the same tactic work to stop other new reactor projects that threaten similar damage? And are renewables any less harmful?
