The World

☢ Liberals leaving nuclear's future 'to the market' Env. Min. Steven Guilbeault said nuclear will have to compete alongside technologies like wind and solar, which are the least expensive types of power available. “It’s not up to the gov' to decide which of these technologies will thrive. It’s going to be up to the market.”

☢ Guilbeault refuses to declare his support of nuclear energy “If you look at what’s happening right now on international markets, including certainly in Canada, … renewable energies like wind and solar have become the most competitive forms of electricity production in the world.”

☢ Guilbeault confronted about his past anti-nuclear stance "We need to dramatically reduce our greenhouse gas pollution in the next 10 years,” said Jack Gibbons. “New nuclear can't do that, because a new nuclear reactor can't be built in 10 years.”

☢ COP26 - Why Nuclear is NOT a Solution 31 min. video recording of panel at COP26

☢ Don’t Nuke the Climate COP26 statement now signed by 471 organisations around the world. Nuclear power is dirty and dangerous; unsustainable; unjust; slow; expensive; a security risk; aging or unproven; not carbon neutral. Our shared energy future is renewable, not radioactive.

☢ Nuclear power is too costly, too slow With a 20-year development timeline, nuclear plants won’t be built soon enough to stop temperatures rising above 2C. So why are we wasting precious time debating them?

☢ 'Fantasy PowerPoint Designs’ Won’t Deliver Nuclear Power in Time to Solve Climate Change SMRs (small modular nuclear reactors) are “a new way to cash in subsidies, and then ask for handouts to keep non-economic reactors operating” all while affordable renewable energy solutions to the climate crisis are readily available.

☢ Uranium – Premises, Promises & Predicaments Fantastic 70 min. video presentation by Gordon Edwards about uranium, its legacy of radioactive wastes, and why Canada’s climate change strategy should not include new nuclear reactors.

☢ When it comes to climate, "Here’s the most important F-word — fast Speed is the only thing that matters at this point. What are you doing for us right now? - Bill McKibbon at COP26

☢ CoP26 Panel: No Radioactive Water Dump into the Pacific

☢ Women Engage for a Common Future hosts this COP26 panel on why nuclear energy is NOT a climate solution, but a FALSE solution

☢ Is it green, or forever toxic? Nuclear rift at climate talks

☢ If Canada is serious about ending financing for fossil fuel projects, it can start here Direct the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) to abandon its plan to finance a cross-border transmission line under Lake Erie for fossil fuel generated power. Please tell Canada’s Infrastructure Minister, Dominic LeBlanc to stop subsidizing polluting gas power exports.

Ontario

☢ Ontario energy minister fixated on nuclear, gas while ignoring low cost wind, solar, storage 9 min. video interview with Jack Gibbons, Chair of Ontario Clean Air Alliance

☢ Ontario snoozes as the world works to address climate change While the world agrees to ramp down fossil fuels, Ontario ramps them up 500%. Please tell ON Minister Smith that it’s time to take climate change seriously and to give the IESO a firm deadline for ending gas use.

☢ Ottawa and other Ontario cities should fight for our low-carbon electricity As thousands of international delegates meet in Glasgow at COP26 to address the global climate crisis, the Doug Ford gov't continues to dismantle Ontario’s climate progress.

☢ Canada’s first nuclear reactor waste disposal facility could squander billions while contaminating Ottawa River More here and here.

☢ Rally participants call for referendum to decide location of nuclear waste South Bruce, ON is one of two ON communities that are involved in the NWMO process to build a Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for the country’s radioactive nuclear waste. More here and here.

Renewables and Conservation

☼ Biden Admin Lays Out Roadmap for Massive Offshore Wind Expansion A recent commitment to lease much of the country’s coastline to wind developers is being interpreted as a watershed moment in U.S. renewable energy policy.

☼ A full supply with 100% renewable energies including storage is already competitive today and would reduce energy costs Climate protection with 100% renewables pays off compared to climate-destroying conventional energies of fossils and nuclear.

☼ No better time to invest in an electric future Key pieces of the puzzle: renewable energy to provide zero-carbon electricity; energy efficiency to reduce how much electricity is needed; demand response to match when electricity is needed with its availability; increased storage capacity; and more transmission lines to connect provincial grids.

Take Action

☢ Tell Ottawa: no more funding for new nuclear reactors Tell federal Ministers to stop wasting our $ on polluting nuclear reactors.

☢ Tell the CNSC to put safety before OPG's profits The CNSC must put a moratorium on the continued operation of the Pickering nuclear station until OPG has submitted proper safety data.

☢ Say no to new nuclear in the GTA Tell Ontario's political leaders that you want investments in wind and solar energy, not a new GTA nuclear reactor.

☢ Decommission the Pickering Nuclear Station immediately after shutdown in 2024 This would provide a jobs transition for the workers and would reclaim the Pickering waterfront.

☢ Stop the Disposal of Nuclear Waste in Northwestern Ontario High-level nuclear waste should be managed using a "rolling stewardship" concept, rather than burying it in a deep geological repository. Learn more.

☢ Say no to nuclear waste in Labrador The citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador do not want to be the nuke waste dump for the world.

☢ International Petition Against the Discharge of Contaminated Water from Fukushima into the Sea And here's another.
