Decolonizing energy and the nuclear narrative of small modular reactors
Kebaowek First Nation is calling for an alternative to a planned SMR project, one that won’t undermine proper consultation and leave a toxic legacy. Decision-makers have become fixated on carbon emissions as a metric for “clean and green,” ignoring the radioactive impacts and the risks of accidents with the technology.

Hot Potatoes: Repackaging Radioactive Wastes
Wed. Feb 23, 7 p.m. ET
The NWMO’s (Nuclear Waste Management Organization, industry body) plan to bury all of Canada’s high level radioactive waste in a central location will require that the wastes be transferred at least twice: once at the reactor station and then again when it reaches the (still hypothetical) location of the deep geological repository. The NWMO has released only very limited descriptions for the repackaging plant and other “surface facilities”, including ventilation shafts, but their scant descriptions and international experience indicate that these will be sources of radioactive releases and new radioactive wastes.

Blackness in the Environmental Movement
Wed. Feb. 23, 6:30 - 8 p.m. ET
Environmental justice cannot be achieved without racial justice. At the intersection of these two movements, Black people continue to take charge in spaces and places without needing an invitation, while mainstream environmental justice continues to ignore and exclude the work, expertise, and treatment of Black environmentalists.

International Cooperation to Align Fossil Fuel Production with Paris Goals: A Bold New Idea - with Tzeporah Berman
Wed. Feb. 23, 1:30 - 2:30 pm ET
While the world has known for decades that emissions from fossil fuels must decline, the Paris Agreement and most domestic policy focuses on reducing demand for fossil fuels and not supply. The United Nations Production Gap Report shows clearly that we are now on track to produce over 100% more oil, gas and coal than the world can burn and stay under 1.5C. What needs to happen to align fossil fuel supply with Paris goals? How can we fast track progress while ensuring equity and addressing energy poverty?

Ring of Fire: context and concerns
Fri. Feb. 25, 6 - 7:15 p.m. ET
We invite you to learn about the historic context and current concerns related to the proposed Ring of Fire mining project in the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Territory. Joseph Duncan, an Indigenous member from the NAN Territory and former chair of the Sierra Club's Ontario chapter, will discuss the club’s work on a report for the government’s Regional Assessment of the Ring of Fire. Our report focuses on the social, environmental, and economic impacts of the proposed development including a survey of some local residents. The $60 billion chromite mining proposal, referred to as the Ring of Fire, impacts 5,100 square kilometers of Northwestern Ontario. The area is rich in mineral deposits, peat moss, caribou, and many other species essential to Indigenous nations’ economy and culture. The region is home to the Indigenous people of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, with a population of 45,000.
