The World
☢ Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima: And now Zaporizhzhia? Although there has been no major radioactive release from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant under Russian occupation, the events are a reminder of the inherent hazards associated with nuclear power. More here.
☢ Inside Ukraine’s captured nuclear plant, explosions and constant fear Workers from the Zaporizhzhia facility describe disappearances at the hands of Russian soldiers and fear of nuclear catastrophe. More here.
☢ Beyond First Steps: Phasing out Nuclear Weapons and Energy Advocates for nuclear energy publicly make the case for government subsidies for nuclear power plants precisely on the basis that these investments will help maintain the military applications of nuclear technology.
☢ The Impossible Promises of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors Slow deployment and safety hazards make SMRs a poor climate strategy.
☢ France’s troubled nuclear fleet a bigger problem for Europe than Russia gas The majority of France’s 56 nuclear reactors are currently throttled down or taken offline due to a combination of scheduled maintenance, erosion damage and cooling water shortages due to recurring heatwaves and droughts.
☢ Militant and colorful mobilization convenes against the storage of nuclear waste In France, 1500 people gathered to organize against the industry plan to bury high level nuclear waste.
☢ The next Land Back battleground will be north of Lake Superior, as Chiefs say no to nuclear waste on their traditional lands “Why don’t they get rid of it where they made it? Northern Ontario is not a garbage can.” The chiefs stated their nations will use every option they have to stop the waste disposal, including “civil protests,” “legal action” and “any other appropriate measures.” More here.
☢ N.B. looking to small modular reactors but there are concerns “It’s astonishing that the utility wants to further the pain by spending more money on new nuclear reactors. Nuclear energy has been a financial disaster for not only NB Power but the province as a whole.” But New Brunswick Liberal leader questions small nuclear reactors
☢ Uranium and nuclear energy in New Brunswick and beyond Lots of links on uranium in Canada listed on this webpage – a webinar, slides, resources, indigenous declarations and more.
☢ A conversation with Dr. Gordon Edwards: contemporary issues in the Canadian nuclear industry, and a look back at the achievements of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility (CCNR)
Ontario
☢ We need the feds to stop Ontario’s terrible plan The federal gov't is on the right track by creating a Clean Electricity Standard. But they must create strong rules to require a zero-carbon electricity system, and that means banning new gas plants, blue hydrogen and investments in SMRs.
☢ Ontario needs above-ground, attack-resistant vaults for radioactive waste We need a safer interim storage solution for Ontario’s nuclear wastes. Read our report here.
☢ Ontario’s deepening hydro mess The Ford gov't has a wide range of options to lower electricity bills and green our grid. But so far, it has given little indication of a willingness to change course from its current economically unsustainable (nuclear) and climate-unfriendly (gas) trajectory.
☢ Enough of the gas industry’s gaslighting! 2 min. video. There’s nothing “natural” about methane gas. For the health of our families, for our pocketbooks and for a stable climate, it’s time to leave their dirty product behind. More here.
Renewables and Conservation
☼ Study finds 100% renewables would pay off within 6 years New research from Stanford U researcher Mark Jacobson outlines how 145 countries could meet 100% of their energy needs with wind, water, solar and storage, while costing less and creating more jobs than continuing with the current energy systems.
☼ Researchers agree: The world can reach a 100% renewable energy system by or before 2050 An energy system that is 100% based on renewables has emerged to become scientific mainstream.
☼ Germany’s Energy Revolution (‘Energiewende’) is working Nuclear phase-out made the renewable energy revolution possible.
☼ We should adopt bidirectional charging technology‘ Vehicle-to-home,’ ‘vehicle-to-building,’ and ‘vehicle-to-grid’ technology, enabled by bidirectional chargers, allows electric vehicles (EVs) to act as mobile energy storage assets, capable of providing power back to homes, buildings, and the grid. Benefits include lower emissions because we can avoid using gas peaker plants, and EV owners will earn $. More here.
☼ Woolly sweaters aren't so bad Dialing down consumption is the answer to replacing Russian oil, gas and uranium.
Take Action
☢ YES! Experimental nuclear reactors (SMRs) DO need an impact assessment: Speak Out! New Brunswick aims to build an SMR. Tell the feds to impose a full environmental assessment.
☢ We need a zero-carbon electricity system ASAP! Please send a message to Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and your MP stating your support for achieving the goal of a zero-carbon electricity system and for strong rules to make this happen ASAP.
☢ We need a safer interim storage for OPG's nuclear wastes: above-ground, attack-resistant, reinforced concrete vaults. Send your message to Premier Ford and Energy Min. Smith.
☢ Say no to new nuclear in the GTA Tell Ontario's political leaders that you want investments in wind and solar energy, not a new GTA nuclear reactor.
☢ Tell Ottawa: no more funding for new nuclear reactors Tell federal Ministers to stop wasting our $ on polluting nuclear reactors.
☢ Reclaim Pickering's waterfront Call for the immediate dismantling of the Pickering Nuclear Station after its operating license expires in 2024. Send a message to Ontario's Finance Minister and your MPP.
Events
☢ Demon Cores and Biological Fallout: traces and diseases of radiation exposure with Beyond Nuclear's Cindy Folkers. Thur. Aug. 25, 8 p.m. ET
☢ ONLINE Short Courses on Radiation, Biology and Society with Gender + Radiation Impact Project and Beyond Nuclear
