Canada Must Switch Its Loyalty From Big Oil to Renewables - by Linda McQuaig
The only real hope of avoiding climate disaster lies in dramatically ramping up the transition to clean energy by building new wind and solar farms at breakneck speed.

That includes voting “nay” to bills crafted to hold mining companies accountable for environmental damage, move Canada closer towards achieving its climate targets, create high-quality jobs in low-carbon industries nationwide and align Canadian laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, an international framework also known as UNDRIP.

Help the case against a Nuclear Waste Dump on Kebaowek First Nation
On January 9th, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved a license to build a 1-million-ton nuclear waste dump called the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) 1 kilometer from the Kichi Sibi (Ottawa River) in Chalk River Ontario. Kebaowek First Nation filed a court application in February arguing that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission did not secure the First Nation's free, prior and informed consent. Please support this very important, precedent-setting legal case by contributing to Kebaowek FN's GoFundMe here.

What Is Left? Rebecca Solnit on the Perennial Divisions of the American Left
“It should be a modest request to ask that ‘left’ not mean supporters of authoritarian regimes.” Not a few people claiming the mantle of the left have been cheerleaders of Putin and Russia for some time. Putin is, of course, an authoritarian, a petroleum-fueled oligarch who might be the world’s richest man, an obstacle to climate action, the leader of an international white Christian nationalist revival, a vicious human rights abuser whose domestic enemies have a habit of dying suddenly, a homophobe, misogynist, and antisemite, and he’s involved in an imperialist war to annex the sovereign nation of Ukraine. You can’t get much further to the right.

Cities for Everyone - Nature & Technology: Friends or Foes in Urban Progress?
Tues. May 28, 11 a.m. ET
With Dr. Nadina Galle, Founder of "Internet of Nature", National Geographic Explorer, and Author of "The Nature of Our Cities". Nadina’s debut book, The Nature of Cities: Harnessing the Power of the Natural World to Survive a Changing Planet provides a nuanced examination of urban existence in the 21st century. Exploring our disconnection from nature, the book introduces an unexpected ally—technology—that not only facilitates reconnection but also enhances health and fortifies cities against climate change impacts. Scientists and citizens worldwide are leveraging technology and the natural world to safeguard their cities—a phenomenon she terms the "Internet of Nature."

War and Climate Change
Wed. May 29, noon ET
Join Covering Climate Now for a one-hour press briefing webinar exploring how conflict, war, and climate change are connected. Violent conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and elsewhere are not only causing terrible human suffering, but they are also fueling the climate crisis. War — and military operations in general — have a massive carbon footprint that is often overlooked. Meanwhile, the immense emissions of the world’s militaries are excluded from limits imposed under UN climate agreements. At the same time, extreme weather and other climate impacts can kindle armed conflict — both within nations as people from drought-stricken rural communities migrate to cities and between nations.

Another Free Ride for Enbridge?
Wed. May 29, 7 p.m. ET
We’ve unearthed another way Enbridge is getting a free ride right here in Guelph. It’s literally under our feet. Every day. Enbridge pays nothing to use the City owned public property (under our roads and other land) to run their pipelines. All other utilities using city land like: cable, phone, fiber optic, water, sewage, Alectra/Guelph Hydro, provide some form of compensation to the City for the use of that land. Meanwhile we the taxpayers are subsidizing Enbridge. That’s not the case in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba or Nova Scotia. But this is the situation throughout Ontario.

Protest: The Fightback Is on to Save Public Health Care
Thursday, May 30, 12 noon ET
Toronto: Nathan Phillips Square across from the Sheraton, 123 Queen Street West - March to Queens Park
The Fightback is on: Either we save our public Medicare now, or we are going to lose it! Giant march and protest!! Send a message to the Ford government & Ontario's Legislature that cannot be ignored.
Across Mid- & Southern Ontario: There will be buses/transportation to the Toronto protest, details on our website about buses.
For more info: info at ontariohc.ca
In Northern Ontario:
- Thunder Bay: Gather at 12 noon at mini-Queen’s Park. Contact Jules Tupker: jtupker at tbaytel.net
- Sault Ste. Marie: Location TBA. Contact Al Dupuis at the Algoma Health Coalition:algomahc at gmail.com
The situation has never been more urgent!! The Ford government is dismantling public non-profit health care, closing local public hospitals' emergency departments and other vital services. They are privatizing hospital care, long-term care, primary care and other services to for-profit corporations. They are allowing for-profit clinics to charge patients hundreds -- or even thousands -- of dollars for needed medical care, in violation of our Public Medicare laws. Thousands of Ontarians are now being forced to pay out-of-pocket for access to health care. Don’t let the Ford government destroy public health care. Save our public health care and restore it so we can be proud of it again.

Plastic People
Sat. June 1, 3:30 p.m. ET
Bloor Hot Docs (at Bathurst), Toronto
This groundbreaking documentary investigates our addiction to plastic, and the growing threat of microplastics on human health. Almost every bit of plastic ever made breaks down into “microplastics.” These microscopic particles drift in the air, float in all bodies of water and mix into the soil, becoming a permanent part of the environment. Now, leading scientists are finding these particles in our bodies: organs, blood, brain tissue, and even the placentas of new mothers. What is the impact of these invisible invaders on our health? And can anything be done about it?
