The Climate Crisis Is Directly Related to Inequality

Science historian Naomi Oreskes says climate change is not just about fossil fuel profits, but also the political ideology supporting capitalism. Oreskes is author of the new book: The Big Myth: How American Business Taught Us to Loathe Government and Love the Free Market, showing that the climate crisis is not a scientific problem, but a political, economic, and social issue.

Living Downstream: Manitoba Watersheds are at Risk from Nuclear Waste Burial in Northwestern Ontario

Wed. June 5, 7 pm CT

Riverview Community Centre, 90 Ashland Avenue, Winnipeg

The nuclear industry wants to bury 100,000 tonnes of high-level radioactive waste upstream from Lake of the Woods, the Winnipeg River and Lake Winnipeg. For the last decade, an organization of nuclear power companies called the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has been conducting a siting process to identify a location for a “deep geological repository” (DGR) in which they intend eventually to abandon all of Canada’s stockpiles of high-level radioactive fuel wastes. There is no approved and operating deep geological repository for high-level wastes anywhere in the world. Early in 2020 the NWMO announced that it would focus on two candidate sites, one in Bruce County in Southwestern Ontario, and one in the heart of Treaty 3 territory near Revell Lake in Kenora District in Northwestern Ontario. Join Concerned Citizens of Manitoba and the Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition in welcoming Dr. Gordon Edwards from the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility and Brennain Lloyd from We the Nuclear Free North for a discussion of the nuclear risks Manitobans face from the proposal to bury nuclear waste in northwestern Ontario and from ongoing nuclear activities in Manitoba.

Hey Trudeau! Cancel the TMX Pipeline Now! Banner Drop

Wed. June 5, 4 pm PT

Brunette Highway 1 Overpass, (Near Braid Sky Train Station), New Westminster/Coquitlam

The Trudeau government bought the existing Trans Mountain pipeline and the expansion project in 2018 for $4.5 billion. The final price tag for TMX, which is being funded by taxpayers in Canada, has ballooned to $34 billion. This is huge and unjust burden on tax-payers in Canada, and any potential future Indigenous owners, and an environmental travesty that will triple the amount of bitumen in the pipeline from the tarsands, harming the planet.

SOS – The San Onofre Syndrome: Nuclear Power's Legacy

SOS is an empowering story of successful community action to shut down leaking reactors. But then they discover horrific amounts of high-level radioactive waste lethal for millions of years are being placed in thin canisters only 108 ft. from the rising sea. Criminal mismanagement of radioactive waste is a syndrome at all 93 reactors in the U.S. and beyond. Will safer alternatives be taken in time?
