GLOBAL

Enough with the 'new normal' nonsense

This fire season has been Canada’s second-worst. The past three years have been the three worst, now releasing four times more carbon than in the 1990s. Europe is having its worst ever year for wildfires. More than 1.5 million people have been displaced in Pakistan and India where the monsoon has been intensified by climate change.

Bill McKibben on Renewable Energy - 16 min. video - must watch

As the Trump administration, and Cdn Premiers Doug Ford, Danielle Smith and Scott Moe grow increasingly hostile to renewable energy, Democracy Now speaks with acclaimed environmentalist and author Bill McKibben about his new book, "Here Comes the Sun," where he lays out a hopeful vision for the future that includes avoiding climate catastrophe, reshaping the economy and saving democracy.

Nuclear outpaced fourteen to one by wind and solar in Europe

Aging infrastructure, unrealized plans, and high costs continue to limit nuclear’s role in swift decarbonization, while solar and wind power are expanding rapidly and outpacing nuclear in new capacity and generation.

Canada’s National Projects: Betting on Nuclear & LNG While the Future Waits

By designating U.S. nuclear and LNG as projects of national interest, Carney has chosen the riskiest energy pathways rather than the most reliable, lowest cost and cleanest options available – wind, solar, storage.

ONTARIO

Will Ontario’s NDP support Ford’s high-cost US nuclear and gas plan? My Op Ed

Renewable energy like solar and wind is lower-cost, quicker to build and safer than nuclear energy, so why is the Ontario NDP not coming out against Doug Ford’s nuclear + gas plan?

TORONTO

Toronto’s Electricity Future Is at Stake

Doug Ford is planning to meet Toronto’s electricity needs by building four new first-of-their-kind U.S. (GE-Hitachi) nuclear reactors near Oshawa and a new transmission line to bring this power to downtown Toronto. But wind and solar + storage would be lower cost and cleaner. Ask Liberal and NDP MPPs in Toronto where they stand – with Ford's nuclear + gas plan, or with a renewable future?

Crossroads of Nuclear/Gas vs. Wind/Solar

Tues. Sept 16, 7:30 p.m. ET

Premier Ford wants to tie us into an expensive, environmentally damaging and very long term nuclear/fossil fuel future. Building new nuclear and gas plants will take many years and many billions of dollars. We don't have that kind of time or money! Climate change is already happening, and much more could be accomplished to combat it - quickly and economically - by moving to sustainable energy sources. This is the critical moment to opt for a path to clean and renewable energy. Join Cinema Politica Danforth, Etobicoke-Lakeshore NDP and Toronto East Residents for Renewable Energy (TERRE) in a webinar to explore how wind, solar and hydro can meet our future energy needs. Speakers include Angela Bischoff, Peter Tabuns, Michael Thunderbird, Mark Winfield, and Paula Fletcher.

Lambton’s Electricity Future: More American Gas? or Wind, Solar & Storage?

Wed. Sep 17, 7 p.m. ET

What’s at stake in Lambton County, and Ontario?

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) – our publicly owned utility – wants to build a large new gas-fired power plant on the site of the former Lambton coal station near Sarnia (and two other gas plants are also proposed for the area), polluting our lungs and adding more climate damaging gasses to our skies. More than 70% of the fossil gas used in Ontario is imported from the U.S., much of it fracked. Instead of locking us into more expensive, American-sourced fossil fuels, we can invest in made-in-Ontario clean energy that’s better for our economy, our health, and our planet such as: demand management, battery storage, a solar farm, and a Lake St. Clair offshore wind farm. What kind of energy future do we want for Lambton – and for Ontario?

With speakers:

Allan McKeown, Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton

Dr. Mili Roy, Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment

Mike Marcolongo, Environmental Defence

Angela Bischoff, Ontario Clean Air Alliance
