The method to Mark Carney’s madness
The MOU, then, is textbook Carney. By telling a political adversary what they wanted to hear, he’s gotten them to agree to something he needs. He’s effectively daring Danielle Smith to do the work required to get her coveted pipeline built, knowing full well she can’t actually do it.

ONTARIO
Notes on the Pickering B Refurbishment by Dr. Mark Winfield
Based on that capital costs, the electricity costs from a refurbished Pickering B would likely be in the 20 c/kwh range, well above the costs of renewables + storage, DERs, or energy productivity/efficiency, and likely too high to be a viable export option to the US. These additional costs will undermine affordability, competitiveness and decarbonization.

Ford government dives into municipal business as it eyes water services
The Ford government gave itself sweeping new powers to seize control over municipal water systems, one of Ontario’s largest public assets worth $175.8 billion, raising fears the move could pave the way for privatization, higher water bills and weaker oversight.

Liars, Grifters, Martyrs, and Fait Accomplis: Thomas Mann’s Antifascist Radio Addresses, 1940–1945
Mon. Dec. 1, 12:30 p.m. ET
The German author and novelist Thomas Mann, winner of the 1929 Nobel prize for literature on the strength of his monumental novels Buddenbrooks and The Magic Mountain, chose exile upon Hitler’s ascent to power in 1933, moving with his family to the United States in 1938. From 1940 to 1945, he authored and narrated a series of anti-Nazi radio addresses that were broadcast to Germany by the BBC; German listeners risked severe punishment. Mann’s radio addresses constitute his most sustained contribution to the Allied war effort. In them, Mann comments on the progress of the war, contrasts fascism with democracy, measures Hitler against Roosevelt, and counters German propaganda with international consensus.

Fast track? Unpacking Carney’s major projects push
Tues. Dec 2, noon ET
Prime Minister Mark Carney seems intent on building his political legacy around getting major development projects built — and establishing Canada as an energy superpower. His controversial Bill C-5 created a pathway for projects to avoid certain regulatory requirements, and he’s sent about a dozen proposals — in mining, energy, electricity and transportation — to the new Major Projects Office in hopes they can be sped along. So far, though, not one has been officially designated as a project in the “national interest,” and not one has been given any special ability to bypass regulatory hurdles. What’s really happening with these projects, and how is the Major Project Office actually involved? Hosted by The Narwhal.

Radioactive waste on public roads through Ottawa? Let’s discuss that.
Tues. Dec. 2, 4 - 6 pm ET
Ottawa Public Library Main Branch, 120 Metcalfe St.
The US-led, multinational consortium running Canada's nuclear laboratories is transporting radioactive waste, including high-level irradiated nuclear fuel waste, on public roads, through the City of Ottawa to the Chalk River laboratories upstream of Ottawa. This is part of the consortium's long-term strategy to consolidate federal radioactive waste from Manitoba, Quebec and southern Ontario at the Chalk River campus, on the shores of the Ottawa River. Chalk River is a poor location for storage or disposal of radioactive waste, because of its fractured bedrock, proximity to the Ottawa River and earthquake-proneness. A 2021 City of Ottawa Resolution specifically asked for radioactive waste imports to the Ottawa Valley to stop, yet imports continue and transport of these dangerous materials on public roads is increasing. Please join us to discuss the problem and what might be done to stop it.

Decolonizing our Energy Futures: Nuclear as a Path Forward?
Wed. Dec. 3, 8 p.m. ET
To operate a nuclear plant is to implicitly commit to an energy infrastructure that generates waste for which effective long-term solutions do not exist. Whatever benefits we may gain from reduced carbon emissions, stable energy supply, and reduced air pollution, in this talk, we argue that choosing nuclear energy creates new forms of settler colonialism that compel us to continue consuming land to absorb the waste. While claiming that nuclear power helps prevent the hierarchical relations common in fossil fuel extraction, the nuclear industry makes invisible new forms of pollution and erasure. We will ask whether nuclear energy may colonize energy futures by yoking us to new forms of “forever waste,” which have not been managed successfully by any nation. Does nuclear offer a path forward, or does it promote a new type of settler colonialism that colonizes our energy futures?

Thorium – game-changer or hype?
Fri. Dec. 5, 1 p.m. ET
With Dr. Gordon Edwards, CCNR.org
There has been an upsurge of promotion of thorium as a nuclear fuel as if it were a brand new discovery with astounding potential. Some describe it as a nearly miraculous and hitherto overlooked material that can provide unlimited amounts of problem-free energy. Gordon Edwards believes these claims fly in the face of the historical record and basic scientific facts. Join us as we unpack this issue. Presentation followed by Q and A. Co-hosted by Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, Coalition for Responsible Energy Development in New Brunswick, Regional Environmental Action Committee (Alberta), and Ontario Clean Air Alliance.

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Sat. Dec. 6, 11 a.m. observe a moment of silence
It has been over 30 years since the murder of 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal (December 6, 1989). This act of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. As we mourn their loss and remember their lives, we reaffirm our commitment to fight the hatred that led to this tragedy, and the misogyny that still exists today. In Canada and around the world, women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals face unacceptable violence and discrimination. On this day, we wear a white ribbon to honour the victims and call for an end to gender-based violence.
