Some of you have been with me since the early 90’s when Tooker and I began this Greenspiration labour of love, connecting all of us with the justice and enviro movements of the day, sharing our ideas, news and events over email. If you’re newer to this list, you may not have ever heard of Tooker. Dear Friends of Tooker,

If you knew Tooker Gomberg, you’ll recall how exceptionally vibrant, alluring and entertaining he was!

But did you know he was also a recorder of history?

>From 1997 – 2004, Tooker was his own TV station. Before the days of WiFi, YouTube, Podcasting & Live-Streaming, before social media, smart phones and AI – he hauled his DIY TV gear around the world.

We are only now uncovering, archiving and logging his 600 hours of historical footage. And with every tape logged, we’re getting more excited, and more convinced that there’s a documentary inside these tapes.

Tooker’s Tapes connect the dots from civic politics to global social justice, climate change and war. His recordings span a large geography – Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax, Washington, New York, San Francisco, Kyoto, The Netherlands, Vietnam, China, and many points in between. And include footage from his election campaigns, peace camps, anti-globalization protests, and bike/climate/enviro demos. 

Dozens of well-known politicians, scientists, authors, academics, entertainers, advocates and activists feature throughout, as well as hundreds of everyday folk from around the world. We’re only one-third through logging the tapes, and already we’ve found interviews with Bill McKibbon, Jack Layton, Amory Lovins, Weibo Ludwig, and David Suzuki. Clips are being posted during the discovery process so you can follow along the archiving process with us on the Tooker Tapes playlist on YouTube. This process allows you to help shape the documentary as a test/preview audience, so please subscribe and leave comments.

I’m producing the project, but it’s being logged and archived by filmmaker and friend, Kelly Green.

All donors will get a screen credit on the documentary, and we’ll keep you in the loop on the development of the project.
