Subject: Upcoming Therapeutic Groups and Workshops at Wabano

Wabano’s Mental Health Counselling Services offers support to Aboriginal men, women and families on their path to healing and wellness.  Please see the list below for upcoming therapeutic groups and workshops (August 2007 – January 2008) and check the attached flyers for details regarding location, childcare support, bus tickets, contact information, meals and snacks.

THERAPEUTIC GROUPS

1.  Art Therapy for Adults

2-4 pm, Tues. 

Oct. 2 – Nov 18

This series of closed workshops for women will explore powerful emotions through art therapy.  The women will learn how to transform and manage their anger.

2.  Family Art Therapy

4-8 pm, Mon.

Sept. 17-Dec. 10

This closed group for children (ages 7-12) and their parent (s) will provide participants with a fun creative experience through art, traditional teachings and circles.  The goal of this group is to improve child-parent relationships and communication.

3.  Moving Forward, Seeking Wisdom…

4-7 pm, Thurs.

Oct. 11-Jan 17

This series of workshops for men provides motivation, support and offers strategies for changing addictive behaviours and maintaining the change (alcohol and drugs).

4.  Relaxation and Healing Circle

2-4 pm, Mon.

Sept. 17-Dec. 3

This series of workshops for men and women will explore methods of relaxation and self-healing.  The goal of this group is to support clients in managing stress , anxiety and depression.

5.  Trauma Recover Phase II

4-7pm, Wed.

Sept. 12-Nov. 28

A closed  support group for women dealing with the results of trauma. The goal of this group is to support women as they create their own individual healing and wellness plan by exploring coping strategies, boundaries and trust, anger, body image and healthy sexuality.

CULTURE

6.  Come Bead With Us

Dates and times to be announced

This open group for men and women will help participants learn new beading techniques, share their stories and have the opportunity to find ways of dealing with difficult times in their lives.

7.  Cultural Reclamation

6-9 pm 2nd and 4th Wednesday

September 2007-June 2008

This open sharing circle with elder Paul Skanks provides the participants with the opportunity to learn and explore Aboriginal culture.

8.  Elder Liza Mosher

One on One and Sweat Lodge Ceremony

Men and women welcome

Tues, Aug. 21-Fri. Aug. 24

Elder Liza Mosher, from Manitoulin Island returns again to Ottawa to support the community through the sweat lodge ceremony and one on one sessions.  Liza uses the water drum in all of her healing ceremonies. 

WORKSHOPS

9.  Addiction:  An Aboriginal Perspective Workshop

10 am – 1 pm, Wed. October 17th, 

This morning workshop for Service Providers and the Community, presented by Rod Jeffries, will examine the impacts of addiction on families and the community.  Focusing on cultural oppression, colonization and trauma.

10.  Lateral Violence Workshop

2-8:30 pm, Wed. 

October 17th

This workshop, presented by Rod Jeffries is for the community and service providers.  Rod will explore the impacts of lateral violence and how we can stop the harm that it creates in our homes, communities and at work.
